A fabulous pair of early porcelain figural cherub candlesticks Chelsea / Samson
A fabulous pair of 18th Century candlesticks with the gold anchor Chelsea mark on the reverse of each. The candlesticks have flower head sconces each one formed as a cherub and each holding baskets of flowers under their arms. Each has surrounding bocage and is raised on an exquisite rococo scroll base. These candlesticks were made in the 18th century(latter part of 18th century I believe likely to be 1760-1790) likely to be Chelsea's gold anchor period. Similar examples were produced by the great Paris imitator. Edme Samson, whose pieces have become celebrated and collected in their own right. Samson's early 19th century workshop created many copies of 18th century British porcelain as well as Meissen, Sevres, and Chinese Exports. The height of these superb candlesticks is 18cm. This a matched pair of candlesticks that belonged to my mother-in-law. They are in very good condition except for a small chip on edge of one of the flowers(as show in the picture) it is small and I only found it by feeling. I do not know much about them other than they are I think from the 1960's or earlier( They have been used on some occasion. The dimensions are 12-1/4" high. 12 1/2" wide from holder to holder and 6 3/4" wide at base. They are fairly heavy and will be packed very well. A most adorable pair of antique. Circa 1870's- 1880's, German porcelain candlesticks with figural nude blond cherubs, or putti. Done in the manner of Meissen. The sticks are as tree trunks having oak leaves and acorns clinging. The candle sockets are of brass. They measure 9-3/4" tall by 5" wide by 4-1/4" deep. Both signed with a blue anchor mark, maker unknown. Very good condition: cherubs without damage, several chips to the oak leaves or stems. The pair is for one price.

My research indicates this piece probably dates to the turn of the century based on the crown mark with 3 oak leaves. The piece measures approx 10-1/2" tall and approx 5-1/2" at the base. Remarkably good condition considering its age. There are several chips off the wings(see photos) Fingers and toes intact! Flower petals in good condition. I bid on this piece at auction because it was so striking. And if I can't sell it I'll just keep it. It is beautifully made. I make no claims about the markings on the bottom of the piece- the crown and N markings are the most reproduced knock off's from what I've been reading. This candle stick is in great shape( no scratches, chips or dings) but is missing a petal from the flower at the cherubs foot- I had to look very hard to find something missing! The sweeping arms of the removable candelabra are covered in trailing rose blossoms and the scrolling base has matching applied trailing blossoms surrounding a breathtaking goddess and putti.
