I inherited this pot from my grandmother who traveled to South America in the 1940's. I think she went with the National Geographic Society. I have 16mm films of her travels including a head-shrinking ceremony. It has a tiny hairline crack in the rim which can hardly be seen without a magnifying glass. It won't show-up in a photo. There is also what might be a small repair on the under side of the rim the size of a dime or it might just be part of the original design. Not sure. If I can get it to show-up in a photo. I'll add the photo to the others. HERE ARE EXPERTS' RESPONSES TO MY INQUIRES REGARDING HISTORY AND ... moreVALUE: Dear Carole Your pot is called Sonajero and is from the Mochica Culture of around 400 AD. Peru. It is worth around 2000 $ or so to a dealer. Jerry- Primative Arts Expert Dear Carole, Thank you for sending along the images of the pot you inherited. Here is what I can tell you based solely on the images and your description. It is possibly from the Moche culture of Peru. 100 to 800 AD. It has a replacement cost value for insurance of around $3,000. What interests me most is the band of crayfish or lobsters with a single sun symbol around the rim. A year or so ago I heard a lecture on Moche imagery by Steve Bourget where he clearly demonstrated that much of their political organization and culture was profoundly influenced by the El Nino oscillation. The crayfish of lobster imagery was part of that. You can research it more. There is a lot of recent literature about that. Gregory Ghent.

PRE COLUMBIAN MOCHE II TERRACOTTA POTTERY EFFIGY VESSEL KNEELING LLAMA COA
Pre-Columbian. North Coast Peru, Moche II, ca. 100 BCE- 100 CE. This effigy stirrup vessel is meticulously modeled in the form of a kneeling llama. The slight turn at the top of the spout places it in the Moche II Period. Body markings are meticulously hand painted in cream on red ground. The llama carries a pack bag or water bag given the bulbous plug on one end that's slung over its back. Its head is strongly modeled with deep set eyes, perky ears, and flaring nostrils. There is a painted symbol on its forehead. The artist even took the time to add incised detailing to the underside delineating the llamas kneeling hooved legs. Marvellous manganese blooms to boot. Paracas textiles are among the rarest and most desirable of all Precolumbian textiles. Rivalled, perhaps, only by the finest Wari slit tapestries and some early Nazca pieces. ARTEMIS GALLERY Moche Jaguar Stirrup Vessel with Conch Shell
Moche Jaguar Stirrup Vessel with Conch Shell Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4 Pre-Columbian. North Coast Peru, Moche III, ca. 300-400 CE. The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. The principal Moche god wears a headdress adorned with a jaguar head and paws and important mortals donned similar headdresses. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. Oddly enough, few Moche artists would have actually scene jaguars as they are not indigenous to the coast. Jaguars prefer moist forest conditions. However, scholars believe that some cubs were transported over the mountains ... morefor Moche rituals and it is also possible that some jaguars wandered down the coast. The animated visage and exaggerated ears and paws suggest that the artist who created this vessel may not have been working to achieve naturalistic representation but rather to evoke the powerful symbolism of the jaguar. Juxtaposing the animal with a conch shell is characteristic of the Moche. Not only did the jaguar climb trees, it also swam in streams, and the Moche were quite taken with the jaguar's ability to swiftly move between one world and another. Minor surface wear. Bichrome finish appears excellent. Intact and near choice! 10"W x 8-1/4"H x 6"D PROVENANCE: Ex-Splendors of the World. Pre-Columbian HEAD Vessel Moche PERU Dig Guaranteed Authentic approx. 700 AD
Pre-Columbian HEAD Vessel Moche PERU Dig Guaranteed Authentic approx. 700 AD Recently I was able to obtain several pieces of authentic pre-Columbian pottery and artifacts from ancient civilizations including the Mayan. Incan, Nazca, Aztec, and Central American cultures, all from one individual’s upscale collection. Up for auction is this very cool Vessel. It is a fat rotund HEAD Vessel attributed to the Moche Civilization during the late classic period. 700AD-850AD. It came from a pre WWII dig and has been off the market until now. The piece shows a head at the top in a very strange expression. Almost like he is in pain. He has a very flat head and piercing eyes his mouth is either smirking or showing stress. His ears pop out the sides of his head. There is a tiny hole in the neck and it looks like a tracheotomy to me, maybe that’s why he ... moreis in pain? In his belly is a wide mouth to fill the vessel with water or blood or whatever this was used for. The front is all red and the reverse seems white, but it could just be the dirt that has adhered to the surface causing the whitish look. The piece is bulbous and measures 9” TALL and is about 7” at its widest. It is unusually lightweight and the walls are thin. The vessel is delicate. The bottom is shaped like a football and it is not meant to stand upright. There are surface stains and some very minor surface spotting. And some information found on the Long Island University Museum site: Stirrup Spout Vessels were the predominant ceramic form throughout the Pre-Columbian Peruvian region ... morefrom the earliest cultures beginning around 1000 BCE until the conquest of the Inca in the 15th century. Stirrup spout vessels comprise an enormous array of styles and designs but have the common characteristic of a stirrup. Or handle, and a spout. The handle, placed on top of a variety of bases that range from the simplest globular shape to elaborate portraits, could be vertical or horizontal. The spout(or spouts) were either attached to the handle or placed just behind it. They were both hand made and mould-made. Some were elaborately crafted, others were mass-produced. The vast majority of extant stirrup spout vessels have been found in burial sites scattered throughout the Andes. Scholars believe that some vessels were used only for burial purposes, while others were used for rituals and ceremonies. Still others, as indicated by the wear and tear are believed to have utilitarian purposes such as for carrying water or other liquids.
