I have 16mm films of her travels including a head-shrinking ceremony. It has a tiny hairline crack in the rim which can hardly be seen without a magnifying glass. It won't show-up in a photo. PRECOLUMBIAN PARACAS NAZCA MOCHE CHIMU MAYAN AZTEC PERUVIAN TEXTILE TROPHY HEADS
Paracas textiles are among the rarest and most desirable of all Precolumbian textiles. Rivalled, perhaps, only by the finest Wari slit tapestries and some early Nazca pieces. This fragment is complete in itself, and would have formed part of the central field of a large mantle. This particular textile is from the Paracas Cavernas culture, as opposed to the Necropolis. Generally, the Cavernas pieces are considered to be the oldest of all Paracas textiles, dated generally to circa 400-200BC. This example shows a stylized feline adorned with several trophy heads. It is in exceptional condition and comes from an old New England collection. No staining and no repairs. It measures 3-1/4" X 2-7/8" not including the small bits of background cloth that would have separated each figure in the central field. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. The principal Moche god wears a headdress adorned with a jaguar head and paws and important mortals donned similar headdresses. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. Oddly enough, few Moche artists would have actually scene jaguars as they are not indigenous to the coast. Jaguars prefer moist forest conditions. It is a fat rotund HEAD Vessel attributed to the Moche Civilization during the late classic period. 700AD-850AD. It came from a pre WWII dig and has been off the market until now. The piece shows a head at the top in a very strange expression. Almost like he is in pain. He has a very flat head and piercing eyes his mouth is either smirking or showing stress. His ears pop out the sides of his head. There is a tiny hole in the neck and it looks like a tracheotomy to me, maybe that’s why he ... moreis in pain? In his belly is a wide mouth to fill the vessel with water or blood or whatever this was used for. The front is all red and the reverse seems white, but it could just be the dirt that has adhered to the surface causing the whitish look. The piece is bulbous and measures 9” TALL and is about 7” at its widest. It is unusually lightweight and the walls are thin. The vessel is delicate. The bottom is shaped like a football and it is not meant to stand upright. There are surface stains and some very minor surface spotting. This is an extremely old piece and quite interesting and BIG piece. The dating. Attribution of culture and historical references came from meticulous research from the original collector via a very reputable auction house in St Augustine Florida. This warrior is poised ready for action, or perhaps only to serve as a sentry guarding palace entrances or staircases. This piece is beautifully modelled with painted armour, helmet, club and neck protector. He is wearing a white, sleeveless tunic, which is decorated with a dark red swirling pattern that also adorns his cone-shaped helmet, and a short loincloth with dark red dots, decorated belt and wrist-guards. Virtually complete paint over entire figure. These highly visual patterns would have communicated community identity and affiliation. Great style with wonderful facial expression and detail. Up for auction we have a wonderful piece of Pre-Columbian Peruvian pottery. Beautiful Moche figural effigy jar that show two figures holding a bound nude male prisoner. Stirrup spout handle protrudes from the back of this orange-ware vessel. Incised raised features. Tan slip on body and reddish/brown slip on figures and handle. A very elegant and unique piece of ancient pottery. Size: 7-3/4" Tall and 4-1/2" at its widest. Culture: Moche. Stirrup spout vessels comprise an enormous array of styles and designs but have the common characteristic of a stirrup. Or handle, and a spout. The handle, placed on top of a variety of bases that range from the simplest globular shape to elaborate portraits, could be vertical or horizontal. The spout(or spouts) were either attached to the handle or placed just behind it. They were both hand made and mould-made. Some were elaborately crafted, others were mass-produced. The vast majority of extant stirrup spout vessels have been found in burial sites scattered throughout the Andes. Scholars believe that some vessels were used only for burial purposes, while others were used for rituals and ceremonies. Still others, as indicated by the wear and tear are believed to have utilitarian purposes such as for carrying water or other liquids.
