I bought this sculpture in 1967 from a friend of my friend Kurt Stavenhagen- at Kurt Stavenhagen's home in Mexico City- when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Kurt Stavenhagen was a Wikipedia-worthy collector of Precolumbian sculpture to whom I was introduced by Ferdinand Anton- a German anthropologist and photographer who filmed my family exploring the Maya ruins at Chichen Itza in 1964 for a movie he made for Time/ Life Magazines and German television which compared modern art. Such as Picasso and Henry Moore, with ancient art like the Maya. I also studied how to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provenance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics- such as this one- take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. 5) Shipping. PreColumbian Colima Fertility Idol Ancient Fragments Artifact FROM FAMOUS DEALER
For sale here is a group of Pre-Columbian fragments of'Colima Flat' figures. There are three in total. These artifacts are broken fragments of figurines produced by the'Colima' culture. Which flourished thousands of years ago in what is now Mexico. The Colimas had an advanced agricultural society and excelled in making depictions of humans with both secular and religious significance. They produced large amounts of rather flattened human forms made of terracotta, of which many survive today. Here are a few fragments of those figures for sale. The two smaller fragments are made of a dark clay covered with a lighter slip. They still show traces of red pigment. One of them shows two hands clasped on a pregnant stomach. While the other shows the genitals and belly of another female figure. They are each about 1x1 inch. The larger ... morefragment is absolutely immense by the standards of'Colima Flats' It shows genitals. Upper thighs, and portions of the stomach of a female deity. Prominently displayed is a great jeweled mantle that hangs on the stomach. The legs are broken off, allowing for an interesting cross section of the two layers of clay. It is around 3x3 inches. These fragments were collected. Sketched, and sold by Larry Borenstein's shop in New Orleans during the 1960's. Borenstein was a founding figure of the culture of modern New Orleans. Googling his name will turn up a wealth of knowledge on his exploits, one of which was the collection of Pre-Columbian art. Here are several of the pieces that were sold in his shop, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by him. All of the certificates include a sketch of the item, guaranteeing their authenticity and uniqueness. g.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bjw%60hquvg%3Eg-14b5c2b97d5-0x10e-
