Ancient Pre-Columbian Moche bottle Circa 300-700 AD
A Moche Stirrup-spout bottle depicting two marine creatures facing each other. With snails marching above them. Circa 300-700 AD. Measuring 8“ high x 5 ½“ Diameter Approx. Throughout Moche history. This creatures were portrayed in a wide range of complex scenes, such as combats with supernatural creatures. There is some lost of paint and chips along the piece as expected for its age. But you can definitively appreciate the craftsmanship of the ancient artist. I purchased this piece from a dealer in an antique show in Miami. FL in 2005, who claimed acquiring the piece in 1956 on one of his travels to Central America. The Moche civilization flourished in northern Peru from 100 AD to 800 AD. Many scholars contend that the Moche were likely a group of autonomous polities that shared a common elite culture. As seen in the rich iconography ... moreand monumental architecture that survive today. Stirrup-spout bottles were the privileged ceramic medium used by Moche artists in the expression of complex ideological messages. Moche slip-painted vessels were typically bichrome. With red decoration on white/cream background. This bottle dates from the Moche apogee period(300–700) during which the fineline painting tradition was used to create a great diversity of narrative scenes. Moche society was agriculturally based. And their artifacts express their lives, with detailed scenes of hunting, fishing, fighting, sacrifice, sexual encounters and elaborate ceremonies. The Moche are particularly noted for their elaborately painted ceramic(like the one here for sale) monumental constructions and their irrigation systems. I am a collector with over 20 years of experience in the hobby; I have acquired many interesting pieces around the world. Anywhere from private collections to highly known auction houses. I acquired this ancient Mayan statue when I visited Costa Rica from an antique dealer. This antique dealer told me that this belonged to the ancient Pre-Columbian culture that inhabited Costa Rica some 2000 years ago. This statue is indeed one of a kind! It is made of Jade and is shaped like a human head and has a very mysterious and ancient quality to it. You are bidding on an ancient columbian mayan necklace with head. The necklace consists of 39 beads. Plus the head. The item measures approximately 36 inches in length. The necklace is held together by a very sturdy thin rope, with a knot on the top. Each bead has it's very own unique carving and texture. The face on the bottom looks of a gargoyle, bat or demon looking creature. The nose is chipped on the face and is below a very large oval brown colored bead. Large 10" Tall Pre-Columbian Jalisco Horned Shaman Figure Vessel, Ancient Mexico
A large Pre-Columbian Jalisco horned shaman hollow figure vessel from ancient West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This example measures approximately 10" tall by about 5 1/2" wide and depicts a seated figure with a prominent horn-like protrusion from his forehead. Such horn-like depictions on figures are believed by scholars to symbolically represent the individual as a shaman. The individual has a false beard-like protrusion from his chin, and is holding an object near his mouth, perhaps a flute-like instrument, pipe or ceremonial object. The object is very heavy due to original sediment from burial remaining inside. Condition: Body is intact. Multiple repairs at the head(but the face area is mostly untouched) with fill/restoration over the break lines around the top. Sides and back of the head, as visible in the photos. 4 Piece Pre-Columbian Nayarit Shaft Tomb Offering Pottery Group, Ancient Mexico
A four piece grouping of Pre-Columbian Nayarit offering vessels. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. The plate measures about 5" across, the bowl about 4" across, the small jar about 5" tall and the fat jar about 5" tall. Each features a highly burnished orange finish. The bowl and the bottom of the plate feature interesting striated burnished decorative designs, best visible when viewed in cross light. These items would have been placed with the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs of West Mexico to symbolically provide sustenance during the journey to their concept of the afterlife. It is rare to find matched grouping such a wide range of forms as these. Condition: Each vessel is intact and in excellent condition. With minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. These items would have been placed with the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs of West Mexico to symbolically provide sustenance during the journey to their concept of the afterlife. A rare and fine double bowl formed Pre-Columbian Colima blackware vessel. From ancient West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 200 A.D. This vessel measures approximately 6 ½” wide by about 5 ¼” tall. The form is that of a graceful double bowl, which features an attractive, highly burnished original black surface. Condition: Intact with no restoration or repair. A stable stressline extends down from the rim on one side. Measuring approximately 2” Otherwise, minor abrasions, weathering and wear. A miniature tripod vessel from Pre-Columbian Nayarit. West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. Measures approximately 2 ¾” tall by about 2” wide. This interesting vessel features a reddish orange pigment over the surface. With a fine cream-colored slip, depicting circular symbolic forms around the exterior, possibly representing the sun. The rounded vessel body sits gracefully atop three tripod legs. Condition Intact overall. This item measures approximately 1 1/2" long by about 1" wide, and comes from one of the prominent ancient West Mexican cultural complexes: Colima, Nayarit or Jalisco. It is difficult to attribute it to one specifically, since it does not exhibit features distinct to any particular one. These items are thought by scholars to have perhaps been used as roller stamps to impress decorative designs over their bodies or fabrics, using natural dyes and pigments. A Nayarit seated figure from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This piece measures approximately 3 3/4" tall by about 2 1/4" wide, and depicts a seated individual. They are shown cloaked in a blanket with ornate designs indicative of Nayarit artistic sensibilities, wearing large ear and nose ornaments as well as a readdressing featuring a large decorated band. Original pigment remains, revealing geometric designs in white black and orange against a red slip, typical of Ixtlan del Rio variety Nayarit material. A wonderful diminutive example(rare) remaining in excellent condition. Condition: Intact with strong original pigment remaining. Minor abrasions. Weathering, wear and expected pigment loss. An attractive pair of vessels from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. likely attributed to the ancient Colima culture of West Mexico. The largest piece measures about 5" tall, while the smaller of the two measures about 3 1/2" tall. One vessel is finished in black, while the other is black. The form of the body of each vessel features a squared bottom lobe, topped by a rounded neck on the larger jar, with each having a flared rim. These display nicely as a pair. Condition: Intact and in original as-found condition. With minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. Otherwise, rootmarks, sediment and mineral deposits indicative of an ancient piece. Large Pre-Columbian Colima Zoomorphic Incense Cover, Ancient West Mexico
A rare and fascinating zoomorphic incense cover from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. likely attributed to the ancient Colima culture of West Mexico. This piece measures impressively at approximately 10" long by about 7 1/2" wide and about 6" tall. The form of the piece is complex. The handle appears to have been formed to represent the arched or undulating body of a lizard or snake, resting atop the dome-like body of the cover. The cover body features multiple rib-like ridges, perhaps meant to imply that the zoomorph is sitting atop a desert mound(with the ridges perhaps representing an eroded and blown sand landscape) Three feet on the bottom of the dome allow for this to function as a cover over a burnt offering(possibly copal incense) ensuring sufficient air can keep the substance smoldering, while the ... moredome-like lid allows for the area to retain heat sufficient to keep burning. Vessels of this type are well-documented in archaeological finds from this region, attributed to this function. Condition: Body is intact. With a repair at the neck of the head(with restoration over the break) and loss of the tail. Otherwise minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. Sediment and mineral deposits remain, indicative of an ancient piece. The underside exhibits staining from the burning of incense beneath this cover. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection. An ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit figure of a warrior. Dating to the proto-Classic period, 100 BC- 250 AD. A long serpent-like face. Grinning through the fleshy lips, with a set of prominent teeth and the eyes set impossibly wide on the head– there is something discordant, even monstrous about this figure. Each component seems at odds with the other; be it the gaunt expression with the broad muscular torso or the thick-set legs with the emaciated arms. Yet to dismiss the art of the Nayarit as unaccomplished is to miss its purpose; these figures were never meant to be beautiful, they were meant to convey a sense of power. Standing on claw-like feet, brandishing a short knife and decorated with a deep ochre pigment, this warrior has an undeniable energy, an energy that seems to bleed from the clay itself. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious ... moreshaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. Displaying all aspects of ancient life, from ritual ceremonies to grand feasts, warriors to simple family scenes.
