FIGURAL INDIAN SPOON Sterling Silver ca. 1915 ~ITEM DESCRIPTION~ Here is a great antique sterling silver teaspoon whose handle is a full-length American Indian running while holding a tomahawk. With ears of corn beneath him. He is wearing a large feather headdress and little else, and is remarkably well detailed. It is unusual to have an"Indian" spoon with the character in action. The spoon is small teaspoon or five o'clock spoon length. 5" long. The bowl has no engraving in it- obviously that was the intention behind making this spoon, but this one never got pressed into"service" The back has a leaf design in the area of the Indian on the front. The back is stamped with the word"STERLING" and also"SMMC" standing for the Sterling Silver Manufacturing Company. This small silver firm existed ... morefrom 1910 to 1930. I would guess the date of this spoon as to around 1915. Email with any questions or if you need more details. This spoon would look great on any serving table. ~CONDITION~ Fine. This is a Niagara Falls souvenir STERLING silver spoon. This is a figural Indian head with a spiral handle. The silversmith work on the figure head as well as the full headdress is detailed. The spoon has a raised relief of Niagara Falls and the words"Niagara Falls" raised relief into the cup of the spoon. The back of the figure and bowl of the spoon is plane except for the word STERLING near the top of the bowl as pictured. It is 4" tall. This piece is old in used condition. In the early 1800s the land now occupied by the city of Davenport was the site of bloody fighting between Native Americans and settlers from the eastern United States. This location was valuable ... morein the westward expansion beyond the Mississippi River. Serving as a trading center of the American Fur Company. Early treaties specified that the Sac tribe could remain in their villages until the land was surveyed and sold to settlers; warfare resulted, however, after Chief Black Hawk and his followers refused to leave the land on the order of the United States Government agent at Fort Armstrong. In the fall of 1832, Black Hawk was captured and returned to Fort Armstrong, where he signed a treaty, known as the Black Hawk Purchase that conveyed to the United States six million acres of land west of the Mississippi River. Two figures stand out in the period that predates the formation of Davenport. The city was named for Colonel George Davenport. An Englishman who had served in the United States Army and then established a fur trading post in the vicinity. Antoine LeClaire, an interpreter who was fluent in three languages and several Native American dialects, served as interpreter for the Black Hawk Purchase. For his efforts the federal government, at the request of Chief Keokuk, awarded him a section of land opposite Rock Island and another section at the head of the rapids

The Niantics, a Narragansett Indian Tribe, lived on this beautiful piece of land. The colonists used it as a lookout point during the French and Revolutionary wars. As a result this lookout post was named Watch Hill. In the 19th century, the Federal government bought the land for $500,000. In 1806, the famous Watch Hill Lighthouse was built. About 90 years later, Jonathan Nash, one of Stan's ancestors, the village's first lighthouse keeper, started to rent rooms in his house, and so the first hotel was born. With the extension of the railroad from Boston to neighboring Stonington, in the late 1830's, developers realized that the area, with its natural beauty, could be a prime resort.
