The Niantics, a Narragansett Indian Tribe, lived on this beautiful piece of land. The colonists used it as a lookout point during the French and Revolutionary wars. As a result this lookout post was named Watch Hill. In the 19th century, the Federal government bought the land for $500,000. In 1806, the famous Watch Hill Lighthouse was built. About 90 years later, Jonathan Nash, one of Stan's ancestors, the village's first lighthouse keeper, started to rent rooms in his house, and so the first hotel was born. With the extension of the railroad from Boston to neighboring Stonington, in the late 1830's, developers realized that the area, with its natural beauty, could be a prime resort. By the turn of the century, there were seven sumptuous hotels on the water's edge. Also, at this time the first"summer cottages" were built by a syndicate of Cincinnati industrialists. Up for auction is a small souvenir spoon from Providence Rhode Island. Probably 1910s/1920s. The spoon measures a little over 4 inches long, is marked"Sterling" on the back of the neck, with a small flag hallmark. The handle is quite ornate, on both sides, and the bowl shows the state capitol building. The detail on the spoon is pretty sharp- the photos here may appear a bit blurry(sorry, my not-so-good photography skills hard at work! In very nice condition. CATALINA ISLAND STERLING SILVER AVALON COLLECTORS SPOON REALLY NEAT
This auction is for a sterling silver Avalon Catalina Island collectors spoon. I do not know the weight but it is fairly heavy and almost 6" long. The bowl has a nice picture of the Catalina Harbor with all kinds of different things on the handle front and back. I will list some of the things that are on here. This spoon might need some cleaning as it starting to show some tarnish. On the top front is the word Sugar Loaf followed by glass bottom boat followed by seal rock and then a big tuna fish. On the back there is a picture of angels flight next is a picture of a fish and the words black bass weight 436 pounds followed by flying fish and another tuna and below that is the word Sterling. I think the things would show up better if it was cleaned a little. No dents or bends so I am assuming this to be very good condition although I ... moream not an expert in sterling silver. The Niantics, a Narragansett Indian Tribe, lived on this beautiful piece of land. The colonists used it as a lookout point during the French and Revolutionary wars. As a result this lookout post was named Watch Hill. In the 19th century, the Federal government bought the land for $500,000. In 1806, the famous Watch Hill Lighthouse was built. About 90 years later, Jonathan Nash, one of Stan's ancestors, the village's first lighthouse keeper, started to rent rooms in his house, and so the first hotel was born. With the extension of the railroad from Boston to neighboring Stonington, in the late 1830's, developers realized that the area, with its natural beauty, could be a prime resort. By the turn of the century, there were seven sumptuous hotels on the water's edge. Also, at this time the first"summer cottages" were built by a syndicate of Cincinnati industrialists. Very rare vintage Iona Island. Scotland Souvenir Spoon. The hallmarks appear to be WHD for W H Darby& Sons Ltd, assayed at Birmingham(anchor) as sterling(lion passant) in 1954(E) It appears to have a dove holding an olive branch embossed on it. I purchased this item at an estate sale some time ago. It was with several other souvenir spoons. And I will be listing those, too. Most are sterling. I could not find many souvenir spoons from Iona Island. The weight is approximately 12 grams.
