It dates from 1896 and is in very good condition commensurate with estate silver. There are minor surface scratches from storage and handling over the years but no serious damage. Antique Sterling Silver Souvenir Spoon DETROIT HARBOR Michigan 14.9g Fessenden& Co. of Providence. RI were makers of sterling silver flatware well known for their souvenir spoons. They had a number of unique patterns but I was unable to identify this particular pattern. Fessenden& Co. was in operation from 1858 through 1922, at which time they discontinued operations. The spoon's bowl. With it's gold wash, is beautifully hand engraved with the harbor's skyline, as it must have appeared back in the in the late 1800's or early 1900's. The skyline includes five billowing smoke stacks and a couple of boats in the harbor. The spoon is in excellent condition, likely unused except for display as part of a small collection. Like all old sterling, it has the very fine scratches from handling and polishing. It has no deep ... morescratches or any wear was visible under a loupe. The GOLD TINTED BOWL is dominated by a LARGE WOOD STUMP lying on it's side. Above the STUMP is the phrase"THE HISTORIC STUMP 1844" In 1844 large deposits of IRON ORE near NEGAUNEE. MICHIGAN were discovered specifically on the roots of a large exposed WOOD STUMP. The first of several IRON ORE MINES began operations shortly there after. The spoon is stamped STERLING and a maker's mark of the TOWLE SILVERSMITHS PAT. 1892.
