At the bottom of the paper there is a map of the area between W Street and Florida Avenue that stretches from 14th Street to 10th Street. This area also remains mostly residential. But the Children's Health Center can now be found at 2020 11st Street(Area 302) Howard University is located just to the east of this map. This map measures approximately 28 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches. Including the border area. Property specific detail. Map is in color. VERY RARE. This map is from the Real Estate Plat-Book of Washington. District of Columbia. Vol. 1. Comprising the entire North-West Section from the Original Plats of Squares& Subdivisions and Additions upon record in the office of the Surveyor of the City of Washington" Constructed under the direction of and published in 1892 by Griffith M. Hopkins, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maps this early and showing this much detail of Washington D.C. are VERY SCARCE. The map has fantastic coloring to it. Cape Mesurado is a headland on the coast of Liberia near the capital Monrovia and the mouth of the Saint Paul River. It was named Cape Mesurado by Portuguese sailors in the 1560s. It is the promontory on which African American settlers established the city now called Monrovia ... moreon 25 April 1822. There is a lighthouse on Cape Mesurado. Located in the Mamba Point neighborhood of Monrovia and in the cape's northwestern portion, that was established in 1855. It is currently inactive, although the Liberian government is seeking financial assistance to restore and reactivate the lighthouse. The year prior to the settlers' arrival, the American Colonization Society dispatched a representative. Dr. Eli Ayers. To purchase land farther north up the coast from Sierra Leone, where the settlers had previously landed at Sherbro Island but were experience a high death rate due to the island's swampy. Vintage 19th century antique map of Africa
This is a lovely example of AJ Johnson's 1862 map of Africa. This rare. Double-page map appeared only in the earliest editions of his New Illustrated Family Atlas and includes all of Africa as well as adjacent parts of Europe and Asia. It was designed during the great age of African exploration in the mid 19th century, and shows Lake Victoria(alternately called Lake Nyanza or Ukerewe Sea) in an embryonic state. The routes of Dr. Livingstone along the Zambezi River are also noted. Numerous tribes and caravan routes are marked on the land area, and watery areas show the routes taken by expeditions sailing around the Cape, including Cook, Carteret, Wallis, the Resolution, Byron, Vasco de Gama, Vancouver, and others. An inset details the remote island of St. Helena, famed as Napoleon's place of exile and death. Lower right hand quadrant ... morefeatures two attractive vignettes depicting Cape Town and Table Mountain and Port Natal. Features the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. Alvin Jewett Johnson(1827- 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. He was born into a poor family in Wallingford. Vermont and received only a basic public education. He got his first taste of the map business as a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published and date to the mid-1850s, but it was not until 1860 that his firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas. The first Johnson atlas maps were mostly reissues of earlier maps published by the J H Colton firm. And early on Johnson himself described his firm as the"Successors to J H Colton and Company" Following the outbreak of the American Civil War the Johnson and Browning firm moved their office from Richmond, Virginia to New York City and published two editions of the Johnson Atlas in 1860 and 1861.
