It was published by Harper& Brothers in New York and London in 1907. This work has 300 individual photographs from his travels. Includes nighttime photos from new type of photography. Schilling was an astute observer and photographer of African wildlife. Much of his photographic efforts were in the brush country near Mt Kilimanjaro and the Nijri Swamps in old German East Africa. There are numerous instances of hunting elephant. Rhino, buffalo, hippo, lion, leopard, and various species of antelope in the volume. The author was a pioneer in night photography and captured wonderful images of predators on the prowl. He tells us in the Introduction. 1646 Keere Map- The Romane Empire' Pieter van den Keere was perhaps the finest map engraver of the late 1500's and early 1600's. His name can be found on beautiful miniature maps issued by Bertius. Blaeu and Jansson among others. He was the brother-in-law of his only real rival for the title of champion engraver, Jodocus Hondius and worked with him on many projects. One of his last efforts, issued in the year of his death, was a miniature world atlas of 20 maps derived from those of the great English mapmaker, John Speed. Combined with his earlier English county maps these have come to be known as the'miniature Speed' and were issued by Speed's publisher, George Humble. They have become very popular among collectors. This fine copper engraved map of the Roman Empire comes from the first 1646 edition of'Prospect ... moreof the most famous parts of the world' and is a'miniature Speed' Keere's inimitable engraving allows him to pack the map with detail without loss of clarity. John Lord Bishop of Carlisle This Map Shewing the Tract of Solomons Fleet in thir three Years Voyage from the Elantic Gulf to Ophir and Tarshish the Necessity of Empolying in it that space of time is Dedicated by his Most Obedient Servent James Bruce. Description: This is a fascinating. Significant, beautifully engraved, intricately detailed 1813 map of eastern Africa, covering from the Mediterranean to the Cape of Good Hope. The map serves to highlight Bruce's speculations, which follow those of Montesquieu, regarding the Biblical ports of Ophir and Tarshish, commonly known as the Lost Mines of King Solomon, from which King Solomon supposedly acquired the massive quantities of ... moregold required to construct the Temple of Jerusalem. Bruce, not illogically, places Ophir in the region of Sofala, near modern day Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Tarshish he sets further north along the Africa Coast near modern day Malindi, Kenya. This region of Sofala(Mozambique/ Zimbabwe) did indeed have rich gold and silver deposits in antiquity and in the 16th century was colonized by the Portuguese with the hope of establishing an African gold source to compete with the Spanish discoveries in the Americas. Alas for the Portuguese, by this time the mines of Zimbabwe had long since been depleted. Bruce bases his theories both on Biblical and related literature as well as on his own observations of Indian Ocean weather patterns, particularly the Monsoons. Many claim that this map and Bruce’s explorations in Abyssinia contain a subtext relating to his Masonic and Templar associations. Bruce’s ancestor, the Scottish King Robert the Bruce, harbored many of the Knights Templar during their prosecution in the 14th century. Tanzania, East Africa. The map follows the route of the missionary Keith Johnston(1844-1879) and details the Usambara Mountains from Fuga to the Indian Ocean. Johnston was the son of the notable English map publisher, Alexander Keith Johnston, and was commissioned to lead the Royal Geographical Society's 1879 mission to Lake Nyasa.
