Various ancient cities along the coast, rivers, mountains and other topographical details are noted, with relief shown by hachure. Notes various Carthaginian Colonies on the coast. The Carthaginian Empire was formed after Carthage(identified here) gained independence from the Phoenician colonies in 650 BC. Carthage became the center for trade and the Carthaginian Empire dominated much of the region, until Numidia, the Kingdom to the west of Carthage, allied itself with Rome in 206 BC leading the Roman conquest of the region in 201 BC. By the end of the third Punic war, the city of Carthage was leveled by Rome, thus ending its independent existence. Carthage's great general Hannibal, nearly conquered Rome with his highly trained war elephants, before being turned back at the very brink of victory. This map was originally copyrighted in 1840, but was issued in Volume two of Chapman and Hall's 1844 edition of Maps of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. 2 awesome maps given to USAF air crew during Desert Shield/Storm. One is labeled"EVC NG 38A- 1st Edition September 1990" and covers Bahrain. Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. The second is labeled"EVC NH-38C- 1st Edition October 1990" and covers Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. These were brought home by my husband after the conflict and were just tucked away. These are really interesting as they are multi-functional. They are made of cameo-colored Tyvek. Printed with water-proof ink, and are extremely tough and detailed. They were designed to be used as an evasion and evacuation tools. Not only are they extremely detailed relief maps, they also have large pictures of wild edibles with detailed descriptions and how to use/eat them, show detailed weather information, land navigation basics, ... morefirst aid instructions, include ways and detailed illustrations of procuring water, and alot of other information of how to survive and hide. The maps also have descriptions of how to use the material of the map itself: ie, use the maps to catch rain, use as shade, use as a blanket or ground cloth, use as a bag to haul food or to protect clothing/food when fording streams. They are really very interesting reading even without the map details.

Internally good. Generally clean and bright with only occasional ... moremarks or spotting. A rare copy. Notes: Three attempts by General Sir edvers Buller to break the siege resulted in defeat for the British forces at the battles of Colenso Spion Kop and Vaal Krantz. On 6 January 1900 the Boer forces of Commandant-General Piet Joubert attempted to end the siege by taking the town before the British could launch another attempt to break the siege. This led to a battle at Platrand and Wagon Hill south of the town. uller finally broke the siege on 28 February 1900 after defeating the Boers by using close cooperation between his infantry and artillery. Sir Winston Churchill then a young war correspondent for The Morning Post(London) Was present at the Relief of Ladysmith after having been taken prisoner( between Ladysmith and Colenso) and escaping earlier during the war. Mohandas Ghandi and the stretcher-bearing corps that he established earlier during the war was involved in a number of actions that took place in and around Ladysmith during the Relief. Four Hubbard raised relief maps: Knoxville(includes Asheville and Smokey Mt Nat'l Park) Winston Salem Charlotte Johnson City Together. These cover most of Western Carolina, eastern Tenn. and parts of South Carolina and Virginia. They show all of the highest peaks of the southern Appalachians and the terrain of the Blue Ridge into southern Virginia. These cost about $45 each 10-12 years ago. They were glued together with rubber cement and hung on the wall. You will have to glue them together again if so desired.

Three Antique relief maps in need of restoration circa 1880 34 x 48 x 2 inches
These are balance of maps being listed as requested by an EBay member. The South American map is currently listed under the description copied below. The three maps in this listing are from the same set but each is in need of restoration. The frames have come apart and some punctures have occured and in the case of the Asian the top 20% is missing. Some water damage is present and the shellac surface is missing as noted in the South American listing. These are being sold AS IS for restoration or parts or simply as an interesting decor when mounted. Antique relief map made by Central School Supply House Chicago ILL. USA Patented May 3rd. 1892 Copyright 1893. Map is one of six discovered during a demolition and is in as found condition. This map of South America is second one to be listed of the group in original frame with damage to bottom ... moreof frame as shown in photos. Other maps are of Asia.Africa,Europe and World and may be listed in the future. The map appears to have had a coat of shellac originally which is mostly missing. The relief map is made of several layers of heavy paper mache based on the damage of one of the other maps The map is 48 x 34 x 1.5 net wt. 14 lbs. The map is too large for Canada Post and Purolator Courier will be used as most economical for Canada/USA.
