Page size is approximately 11.75 by 14.75 inches(30 x 37.5 cm) Thus. P aper size is approximately 14.75 inches by 22.25 inches(37.5 x 56.5 cm) for double page maps.which have the original fold as issued) and 11.75 by 14.75 inches for the single page maps. Blackie's atlas maps are very collectible. And the large folio size makes them well suited to display. These maps are printed single sided, as was common with the higher end atalase of the era, and with nice margins. The maps from this book are very handsome, interesting, and perfect for framing. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne's work represents an important ... morestep in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor. Bellin. Like his predecessor, used the position for furtherance of his private atlas publications. Both Raynal's'Atlas de toutes les parties connues du Monde' of 1780-81 and the'Atlas Encyclopaedique' of 1787-88 owe much to the massive map resources of the French naval ministry. He also published general atlases throughout his career. The unusually detailed map is a result of the fact that the Caribbean was a principal focus of Raynal's work. Which proved so controversial that it was banned and publicly ... moreburned owing to its anti-slavery sentiments and criticisms of the Catholic church expressed by the former Jesuit. Published at a time when there were some 60,000 slaves in Martinique, to get a sense of Raynal's rhetoric on the subject of slavery we present an excerpt in translation from the French original: The sacrilegious yoke of oppression shall be broken as the Negro slaves lack only a chief. Sufficiently courageous to lead them on to vengeance and slaughter. Spanish, Portuguese, British, French, Dutch- all these tyrants will become the victims of fire and sword. The plains of America will voraciously soak up the blood which they have long awaited, and the bones of so many wretched victims, heaped upon one another during so many centuries, will leap for joy.
