The map is a copperplate engraving printed on laid paper circa 1676. The sheet measures 10 1/2 X 8 inches and is in fair/ poor condition due to age toning. Light gray stains, a small rubbed area and several small book-worm holes. The image is titled"Biturigum Ducatus. The map comes from the Mercator's"Atlas Minor" reissued by Johannes Jansson. And published by his son in law, Johannes van Waesbergen, in Amsterdam, in 1676. There is Latin text printed on the reverse side. The map shows the Berry region of France. A lovely. Decorative county map, with hand colouring. Measures approx 50cm x 38cm excluding margins, vertical centrefold as issued strengthened on verso. Latin text on verso. Engraving platemark visible all way round. Very good condition with a few reservations. Very dark and clear impression; even toning; a little bit of light browning. But really no significant foxing(one noticeable spot in top margin) or browning on the printed area. Box of slightly darker browning around the edge, a result of previous framing. Some riding up of the paper along the centrefold. Held up to the light there are quite a number of pinholes(I imagine caused by insects) particularly top right and bottom right; there are also 4 slightly larger holes towards the bottom with tiny patches on the verso; looked at flat from the front you wouldn’t really notice any of ... morethis. Trimmed the whole way round, very close to the platemark bottom right. A tear on the left side, not affecting the engraved area; couple of tiny edge repairs. Original copper engraved antique map of the British Isles(Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae Novo Descriptio) by Jan Jansson. First published in Amsterdam 1638. Later editions in Jansson's Novus Atlas up to 1649. Lightly hand-coloured in an antique frame 600x490mm. The map is extremely detailed with a large number of place names(23 for the Isle of Man alone! There is a large royal coat-of-arms. With lion and unicorn on the left hand side. There are small ships in the sea, and lines of latitude and longitude. Like most Jansson's maps, the paper is uniformly age-toned. Apart from this the map is in very good condition.

Jansson Hondius Peru Antique Map, Perú mapa in excellent condition SALE!!
We are selling an original Johannes Jansson Peru Map circa 1650-1665 printed in Amsterdam- this map is about 350 years old and is not a copy. This is a large decorative antique map with nice decorative cartouche. Compass rose(north is to the left) a whole fleet of ships, and three sea monsters- it contains all the interesting aspects of early maps. The plate for this map was originally developed by Hondius, and later Jansson modified and added his name to the bottom. The overall condition is very good to excellent. There are no worm holes. The center fold is in perfect condition, the map impression is strong and the paper is in excellent condition with only slight browning over the ages. This map has been in our family and framed we believe for at least 100 years(it was hanging in an old family farm house in the 1930s) so we are certain the ... morecolor is at least old if not original. The coloring is quite muted and nicely done without the modern bright colors. The map is approximately 21 3/4 inches by 17 1/4 inches(55 cm X 44 cm) and the map impression is 19 1/4 inches by 15 inches(49 cm X 38 cm) The map is framed in a fine cherry one inch frame. The verso has printing which appears to be in Latin text. We would be willing to ship in frame or remove from the frame and ship just the map in the US- buyers choice; out of frame is free shipping. An original antique map by noted Dutch mapmaker Jan Jansson of Calais and the surrounding area in France. Published in Amsterdam in the c.1640s. This is an original antique engraved map. Not a facsimile or reproduction of any kind. It includes the towns of Calais. Gravelines, Marck, Ardes, etc. The map has some old and attractive hand colouring and includes some highlights in gold. Title: Le Gouvernement de Calais& Pays Reconquis Size(of the engraved area) 46.5 x 56 cm Condition: There is some old insect damage and resultant small holes to the head and foot of the central fold. Also the old green verdigris pigment colour used to colour the land area on the map has browned somewhat. I am starting the bidding at just 99p for a map that is over 350 years old! ITEM DESCRIPTION: This auction is for an original. Rare and well-preserved nautical map entitled“INSULAE FLANDRICAE OLIM ASORES DICTAE. Published in the 1690s by Valk and Schenk. The map was created using copperplates acquired from Jan Jansson, one of the leading cartographers of the seventeenth century. Measuring roughly 21 inches high by 24inches wide(including ample margins) The map retains soft yet crisp early coloring. Moreover. There is almost no toning or foxing within the printed field, nearly all noteworthy condition flaws being confined to the outer margins as shown. Lastly. To allay the concerns of prospective buyers, the map is accompanied by a“Certificate of Authenticity” issued by the president of the Portuguese Academy of Antique Arms. Printed on watermarked paper and bearing the Society’s official stamp. Both together bought in 1694 the original copper plates engraved about 1660 by JANSSON and reused them until about 1700. Jan JANSSON lived from 1588– 1664/ Gerard VALK lived from 1650– 1726/ Pieter Schenck lived from 1645– 1715/ The map was printed in black& white having been coloured by hand. One unusual and quite interesting aspect of the map is the name: INSULAE FLANDRICAE given to the Azores which derives of some of those islands having been partly colonized by flemish families during the second half of the XVth century. Silesiae Ducatus Nova et Accurata Descriptio 50 cm x 39 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 47 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, circa 1633 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the finely engraved map of Silesia(Van der Krogt 2900:1B) published by Jan Jansson(1588-1664. Also known as Janssonius) Centred on(Breslau) The map covers much of what is now southern Poland extending to Krakow in the east and as far west as Prague and Frankfurt an der Oder. Jansson's father-in-law(1563-1612) purchased the map copperplates of the renowned Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as a foundation Hondius added maps of his own. A practice later continued by his sons and their brother-in-law Jansson that allowed the eventual publication of nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the ... moreMercator-Hondius Atlas. Interestingly, this map does not have any text on verso and multiple inobtrusive vertical folds and two horizontal folds indicating that it was not printed for an atlas, but was likely intended for inclusion in a smaller volume where it had relevance. Jansson was not a true cartographer and typically published finely engraved maps that were close copies of earlier maps. This map is a case in point as it is a close copy of the 1570 map Silesiae Typus by Abraham Ortelius which in turn was based on the 1561 map of Silesia by Wroclaw based geographer Martin Helwig(1516-1574) Quite decorative. This well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome title cartouche featuring the arms of Lower Silesia. Description: A fine first edition first state old color example of Jan Jansson's 1636 map of the northeast American coastline from Cape Lookout(here identified as C. of Feare) to Nova Scotia. The map includes parts of modern day North Carolina. Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Nova Scotia. Most particularly, it offers some of the earliest depictions of the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, Manhattan Island, New Amsterdam, Long Island, and the Great Lakes. Cartographically Jansson derived this map from the 1630 map of Johannes de Laet and Hessel Gerritsz. Though it is presented on a much larger ... morescale, Jansson's map adheres closely to the de Laet nomenclature with few changes of significance. In addition to increasing the map's scale, Jansson also enlarged the scope of his map to cover additional lands to the north and west. Jansson's adherence to the de Laet model continues on the verso where the de Laet text describing the region is transcribed verbatim. A large decorative title cartouche of a baroque ethic in the upper left quadrant present's the map's title Nova Anglia Novum Belgium et Virginia. The Cities, Earles, and households are described and observed. It features 7 hand painted Armorial, Coats of Arms, several cherubs or putti and the Mitre and Crozier of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Coats of Arms included are those of Thomas Holland, Edmund Graye, William Neuill, Edmond Woodstok, Hubert de Burgh, William Iprese Earl of Elan, and Odo Bishop of Bayen. There are also depictions of Sailing Ships and Sea Monsters. This map is not only a fascinating historical record of Kent, England, it is also a decorated work of art. The recovering was professionally redone about 6 years ago at great expense using genuine Kvadrat fabric which cost over £800. The whole sofa was over £2000 when purchased from a specialist dealer. Since then the sofa has been almost unused and was more of a decorative piece than a used item in our old house. It has been in store and unused in a spare bedroom for the last 2 years. A 16th century Spanish legend of uncertain origins described gold and silver rich islands located somewhere to the east of Japan. These islands were so saturated in precious metals that the tall, friendly, light skinned inhabitants even fashioned their homes out of gold. As improbable as it may seem, the idea inspired at least two expeditions to the region. Anthony Van Diemen, the director of the Dutch East India Company in the Indies, initiated an unsuccessful first expedition under Abel Jansz Tasman and Matthijs Hendricksz Quast in 1639, and a second more interesting expedition under Maerten de Vries and Cornelis Jansz Coen in 1643. It is this latter mission that most influenced the present map.
