Antique 1904 World Atlas
The Twentieth Century Atlas of the Commercial. Geographical and Historical World. L.G.Stahl, 1904. This oversized book includes a world atlas with colored maps of the country lines at that point in time. It also includes state maps of the U.S. for states that had reached statehood at that time(so no Oklahoma. New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii or Alaska) There is a complete Census from 1900. Many color illustrations and black and white illustrations. Not sure what normal wear would be for a book of this condition. But pages are all readable and seem to be in very good condition for it's age.

Earlier editions of the atlas produced in this partnershikp are a somewhat curious mixture- some are German language reprints of earlier Stieler maps dating as early as 1826 but just as many are Swedish language maps compiled in the 1830s by the Uppsala-based historian and geographer(1788-1852) By this point. D'Anville published the work the year prior to this edition in a three volume small sextodecimal set but for whatever reason he and his publisher elected to reissue this enormous volume as a"new edition reviewed by the author" A somewhat curious venture as the text pages are typically twice the size of the maps. It amounts to the 18th century equivalent of a"large print edition" with regard to the text, and is far less commonly ... moreseen than the three volume set of the atlas. In his preface to the work, D'Anville writes(perhaps with bit of hauteur) that"having given charts. More ample than any preceding, of the four parts of the world, followed by a map of the two hemispheres, I have devoted myself to the composition of a second series reserved ancient geography; an object that has ever been dear to me. It would appear superfluous to recommend particularly what is generally acknowledged; the necessity of being instructed in this Geography to read ancient history with profit. At the head of this series is a general chart of World as known to the Ancients; followed by the Roman Empire in two parts east and west, in which the objects are more exactly and explicitly detailed than in the maps hitherto published of that empire. So without further. Ado let us begin our survey of the atlas with those three maps that Monsieur D'Anville believed exceed those"hitherto published" in detail. We begin with the Orbis Veteribus Notus extending past the Ganges in the east and as far south as Zanzibar- a notation informs of the presence of cannibals here within the African interior. Atlas Juvenilis eller Geographiska Chartor Oblong Quarto. 30 copperplate engraved maps, 20 cm x 16 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Johann Edmann. Uppsala, 1768, 2 added maps 1789& 1796) We are pleased to offer this example of a world atlas by Swedish engraver and cartographer Anders Åkerman(1723-1778) featuring 30 finely engraved miniature maps. Åkerman was based in Uppsala. And is known as the"Father of Swedish Globemaking" for his production of terrestrial and celestial globes although he also produced atlases and nautical charts. Examples of his are found in the Royal Academy of Science in Stockholm. And an impressive armillary sphere made by Åkerman can be viewed from an Italian museum collection in Milan. Interestingly. The atlas has two maps that have been inserted to replace Åkerman's original ... moreplates- a map of France by the eccentric Uppsala geographer Daniel Djurberg(1744-1834) dated 1796 and the map of Sweden dated 1789 by Åkerman's partner in map and globe production Fredrik Akrel(1748-1804) Akrel took over the business after Åkerman's death in 1778 and is believed to have reissued this 1768 atlas with these two"updated" maps around 1798 in hopes of getting some more mileage off the then 30-year-old plates. The atlas has in the front endpapers the signature of Jonas Frisk(1787-1849) and the date of 21 August 1799 when he would have been 12 years old- Frisk went on to build a very successful business in Stockholm as a furniture dealer and mirror manufacturer. It also bears the signature of another Jonas Frisk and the date 1873. Presumably a grandson, as well as a"Rusti Rasti" Strength in Justice) bookplate with an undecipherable signature. The back endpapers have a meticulously recorded manuscript list of world city populations from Nanking at#1 with 1,500,000 to Königsberg at#49 with 70,000 residents. It is a revised edition illustrating the new boundaries and territorial changes effected by the Peace Treaties from World War One. The book measures 14" x 10 ¾" It has a red cloth covered hardcover, with black lettering. There are 40 plain backed maps. Which would be suitable for framing if required, plus a 32 page index to place names. The maps are printed on a high quality smooth paper. But the index pages and endpapers are a softer and thicker type of paper. The map pages are in GOOD CONDITION. With only slight signs of general ageing and no tears or marks, apart from Map 1(The World) which has a tiny burn mark(see photo below) The endpapers have light foxing and a few small edge chips. Charts, graphs, text, history, and some nice lithograph pictures. The hardbound book is 14" x 11-7/8" in size with 200 numbered pages. I found many of the maps showed original states. Countries, and regions that have long since changed. Most are in tinted color. Ever the US had one Dakota region& Indian Territory where Oklahoma is now. I was surprised at how much Africa and Russia has changed. Africa was about 1/2 unsettled lands and Russia was divided into over 30 separate regions/ states' Besides the maps. There are lots of charts and graphs with various information. The lithographs of the US Presidents ... moreand Races of Man were classic and very well drawn. CONDITION: The atlas is complete with all the maps and numbered pages. The pages are in very good condition with some very light age tanning as can be expected. The covers are original and strong with fading and corner bumps and dents as you can see in the photos. The spine has been replaced with new leather. All the Maps.
