This is a fine 1804 Map of South America by the famous mapmaker Aaron Arrowsmith. Aaron Arrowsmith lived between(1750–1823) was an English mapmaker. Engraver and publisher and founding member of the Arrowsmith family of geographers. He became Hydrographer to the Prince of Wales ca. 1810 and subsequently to the King in 1820. In January 1790 he made himself famous by his large chart of the world on Mercator projection. Four years later he published another large map of the world on the globular projection, with a companion volume of explanation. The maps of North America(1796) and Scotland(1807) are the most celebrated of his many later productions. He left two sons, Aaron and Samuel, the elder of whom was the compiler of the Eton Comparative Atlas, of a Biblical atlas, and of various manuals of geography. Dating to 1838 and published well after the death of both Aaron Arrowsmith and Samuel Lewis. This is without a doubt the last iteration of this seminal map. The present example follows the re-engraving of Arrowsmith's globular projection by Philadelphia publisher Samuel Lewis for sale to American audiences. ... moreThe Lewis re-engraving, which was issued in partnership with Aaron Arrowsmith and T. L. Plowman, appeared in 1809 and is itself extremely scarce, with only two examples being known. This variant, published 19 years later, is even rarer and is the only known example. Arrowsmith's original map of 1794 was one of the great cartographic achievements of his age. The map was designed to illustrate the important discoveries and navigations of Captain James Cook. All subsequent variants on Arrowsmith's map follow his basic globular model and include both an illustration of the great navigator and markings showing the tracks of his three voyages of discovery. I simply am cleaning out my china closet before my children have to. I was gifted these, just under 3" high creamer and sugar set, for a wedding gift, in 1960. The mark is Arrowsmith, sterling, weighted base. Still handsome enough to use or scrap. Your choice. Creamer has a 1/4" crease ding, mid-body, and smaller one on weighted rim. Antique J Arrowsmith 25x21 inch Detailed Map of the United States Framed
A large and highly detailed antique framed engraved map of the Eastern United States. By one of England's foremost map makers of the period John Arrowsmith. The map includes a massive territory named‘Northwest Territory or Huron’ and the‘Sioux’ region. The map shows Indian Tribes, towns, early railroads, roads, rivers, mountains, lakes, islands and other details. The piece is from an early edition of'Arrowsmith's The London Atlas of Universal Geography' page 43 published 1834. MEASUREMENTS: The engraving plate is 25 x 21 inches; the map border is18 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches; and the frame is 31 x 36 inches LET’S TALK CONDITION: Very fine condition.
