Covers the entire continent from Panama to Tierra del Fuego. Includes the Falklands and South Gerogia Island. Pinkerton offers impressive detail throughout noting indigenous groups. Missions, towns and cities, swamps, mountains, and river systems. Lower right hand quadrant features the title plate and four distance scales, British Miles, Portuguese Leagues, Castile Leagues and French Leagues. Cartographically speaking this is an often neglected part of the world- especially in the early 19th century. Though the coastlands and open plains had been well mapped early in the 17th and 18th centuries, the interior was rarely penetrated. The combination of mountainous ... moreterrain, daunting jungles, malaria, and unfriendly indigenous groups combine to make this area all but unexplorable- even today. Nonetheless, Pinkerton makes a commendable attempt to piece together early conquistador accounts, explorer's journals, missionary records, and indigenous reports into a coherent mapping of the area. In doing so he achieves a number of significant advances. Probably the most interesting aspect of this map is Pinkerton's treatment of the apocryphal Lake Parima. Lake Parima was first identified by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 16th century- though he admittedly never saw the lake himself. Raleigh associated the lake with indigenous legends of Manoa and the supposed site of El Dorado. Many early maps actually show'El Dorado' on the shores of Lake Parima, though Pinkerton curiously does not. However, his rendition of Lake Parima is vastly larger than most previous examples from the late 18th century- even those by other English cartographers such as Laurie and Whittle. Description: A rare and important 1818 map of the Western Hemisphere by John Pinkerton. Depicts North America. Central America and South America as well as parts of Polynesia, Siberia and Greenland. In North America, thanks primarily to the work of Cook in the Pacific Northwest the coasts are rendered with considerable accuracy. The interior of North America, particularly the American West, is still rather vague, though much of the cartography is clearly derived from Humboldt's explorations. Notes the conjectural Lake Timpanagos, often associated with indigenous reports of the Great Salt Lake. The United States, still quite small, does not yet include Florida, Louisiana, California ... moreor Texas. South America exhibits its typical clear outline and speculative interior. Pinkerton resurrects the idea of Lake Parima in Guyana- supposed site of El Dorado- which had all but disappeared from most other early 19th century maps. On the other hand, Pinkerton has dropped the Apocryphal Laguna de Xarayes, commonly located at the northern extremis of the Paraguay or Parma River. However, he does note several supposed gold mines deep in the Amazon, which may or may not reflect indigenous legends of El Dorado. Drawn by L. Herbert and engraved by Samuel Neele under the direction of John Pinkerton. The map comes from the scarce American edition of Pinkerton’s Modern Atlas, published by Thomas Dobson& Co. of Philadelphia in 1818. Size: Printed area measures 22 inches high by 20 inches wide. It extends northwards as far as Greenland and Alaska, incorporating the full Hudson Bay, southwards include all of South America, eastwards to Europe and Africa, and westwards to Hawaii, the Aleutian Islands, and the Friendly Islands. Cartographically this map represents a notable attempt to combine cartographic speculation with new discoveries and political advocacy and is most interesting for its presentation of North America. ... moreDrawn at the height of British- American hostilities related to the War of 1812, the North American portions of this map heavily advocate for British interests. Despite being issued in 1812, the western boundary of American terminates at the Mississippi River- a clear rejection of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. There is a reason for this. By the turn on of the 19th century, it had become abundantly clear to everyone involved that the true wealth of North America lay in the fur trade, particularly the export of beaver pelts to the infinitely wealthy markets of Asia. By this time there were two forces in the fur trade, semi-independent American traders following in the footsteps of Louis and Clark and British traders operating under the jurisdiction of the Hudson Bay Company, whose territorial monopoly they were actively extending towards the Pacific. The key to exploiting this region was control of the Columbia River, which provided an easy access point to the interior. The explorations of Louis and Clark, as well as the acquisition of Louisiana and its tentative inclusion of the as yet unnamed Oregon region put the commercial ambitions of the Hudson Bay Company's Northwest

Antique 1809 Map, Engraving WEST INDIES from Pinkerton's Atlas, HUGE!! Cuba, FL
I bought this at an auction. And already regret it because it's so heavy and so yellowed. I'm hoping someone adventurer out in Ebayland will want to take this on a treasure hunt! Th ese huge. Maps from Pinkerton's 1809 Atlas sell for hundreds of dollars, but sadly, this one is very yellowed. It's framed. And appears to have hung in a garage for the last 200 years. There might be a bit of mold in the upp er left corner- you can see a closeup on photo#10. Th is ma p was made from copper plate etchings. And" r elief" was illustrated with hachures. Or lines- my new wor d for the week. This really is quite a work of art. It was also hand-colored. Although the subtleties of the color are kind of lost to the ages. And the yellowing. My camera likes to add a yellow cast to everything anyway. I took all but 2 of the photos ... morein the shade. So they're especiall y yellow! The FIRST TWO pictures. However, were taken in direct sun. They should give the most accurate color perspective. From a histori cal perspective. This map is a marvel! Northern South America is labeled the"Spanish Main! Florida was not yet a state- that wouldn't happen for another 10 years! The island we now call Haiti and the Dominican Republic here is called"Hispanola. Pue rto Ric o is called" Porto Rico" And Saint Kitts is labeled St. Christopher's. Fascinating! This map is in a very heavy frame! If you look at the final 2 photos. I pulled the paper backing back a bit so you can see how the h eavy wood frame is supporte d by 2 big vertical planks- that's what the eyebolts holding the wire for hanging the picture are screwed into. According to Geographics. An online dealer of F ine M aps. The drawing of the maps for the Atlas was done by L. Herbert and the engrave r was Samuel Neele under the direction of John Pinkerton. The atlas was published in London by'Cadell and Davies' and'Longman Hurst Ress& Ormes' for John Pinkerton's. ME ASUREMENTS: The Frame is 22 1/2 inches tall

Authentic Pinkerton Detective Agency Lieutenant Hat Badge. This is an obsolete badge. And not a police badge. This historical badge is in good vintage condition, it is gold tone, heavy embossed, and has some of the blue enamel has flaked off. It has a screw back hat post and pin for attaching to a hat. It measures 2 3/4" x 2 1/2" and is domed. It has an eagle with wings spread over the"Lieutenant" which is above the Pinkerton crest. Hello everybody. Up for sale here is original. Late 1880's Tower Detective/ Pinkerton Handcuffs with an original, working key. The cuffs show signs of wear(please see photos) but they work perfectly. The cuffs were owned by T.W. Mulry. I was able to find some information about him. And have included it in the pictures section of this listing. His name is engraved on both cuffs. I inherited the cuffs from Mulry's relative, who recently passed away. If I can be of any help to anybody. Extending north as far as Canada and Maine, and south to the Chesapeake Bay and northern Kentucky. The states of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont are illustrated in full. Ohio and Michigan are collectively identified as the Western Territory and are partially included. The Great Lakes Ontario, Erie, and Huron and represented fully. Maine, identified here as the'District of Maine' is given the ambiguous borders associated with the 1783 Treaty of ... moreParis as the end of the American Revolutionary War. As might be expected, Pinkerton's postcolonial sympathies lay heavily with British interests and Maine is here presented as more attached to Canada than the United States. Just two years after this map was made the War of 1812 broke out. The War of 1812 arose over various unresolved issues associated with the American Revolutionary War, including some associated with the Maine border. During the war the British were exceptionally aggressive in this region and seized most of the Maine coastline. It was not returned to the United States until the 1815 Treaty of Ghent. This map was created during the transitional period of expansion shortly following the American Revolutionary War.
