Genuine Antique map"Marmarica Nuova Tavola" by Ruscelli. Venice, c. 1561. This 450 year old Ptolemaic map of north eastern Africa gives a close-up view of the lower drainage of the Nile, and interesting detail of the coastline on the Mediterranean. Seas are stippled and mountains and lakes are imaginatively illustrated. Ruscelli's maps were some of the first to use the then new copperplate engraving method, rather than historic wood blocks. Ptolemaic maps, representing the early understanding of world geography as mapped by Claudius Ptoloemy in the second century, were the standard for well over 1000 years until exploration expanded understanding in the late 15th century. 1646 Keere Map- The Romane Empire' Pieter van den Keere was perhaps the finest map engraver of the late 1500's and early 1600's. His name can be found on beautiful miniature maps issued by Bertius. Blaeu and Jansson among others. He was the brother-in-law of his only real rival for the title of champion engraver, Jodocus Hondius and worked with him on many projects. One of his last efforts, issued in the year of his death, was a miniature world atlas of 20 maps derived from those of the great English mapmaker, John Speed. Combined with his earlier English county maps these have come to be known as the'miniature Speed' and were issued by Speed's publisher, George Humble. They have become very popular among collectors. This fine copper engraved map of the Roman Empire comes from the first 1646 edition of'Prospect ... moreof the most famous parts of the world' and is a'miniature Speed' Keere's inimitable engraving allows him to pack the map with detail without loss of clarity.
