John Speed Framed under Glass Africa Map Published by G. Humble 1626 Print
MAP– NO RESERVE Acquired at an estate sale is this framed under glass map of Africa. From my research the original map was by John Speed(1552-1629) The map maker of the time from England. This map was created to describe the manners of the people and buildings in Africa. It was then“newly done into English” by John Speed and published by G. Humble in 1626. I believe this to be a reproduction map. Frame is a brown wood style bark with hints of the bark missing around the inner edge to reveal some wood grain– great frame for this map. Frame measures 24 ¾ inches long 20 ½ inches tall. The map measures 18 inches long and 14 inches tall. The map paper has a darker tone on the left than on the right. There are some wrinkles in the map– difficult to photograph– but it gives it that old style look to make you think“is it really from 1626? ... moreThere are a couple of other issues I found with the map: 1. The top row of ovals. The second from the right has a tear that sits nicely to make it hard to see. 2. There are two small slots or holes in the lower left area between“The Aethiopian Ocean” and“The Tropicoke of Capricone” Photos of these condition issues are part of the listing. The back has brown paper backing and professional picture frame wire making this unusual map ready to hang when it arrives. Please use the photo enlarger tool in eBay to see the great details.
