Cape to Cairo(Corrected) Air Route" linear map. 25 in. wide, extending over approximately 30 feet, issued in 4 sections, each bound separately in strong pictorial boards. Scale 1:1,000,000. The entire map is linen backed. The sections combine to cover the entire air route from Germiston Airport at Johannesburg, to Heliopolis Airport at Cairo, which substantially was that followed by Imperial Airways in the 1930s. The map was published in 1945 by the Director of Military Survey G.H.Q. Pretoria, South Africa, presumably before the end of World War II. It is ingeniously designed and folded. Enabling a navigator to open a double panel(16 in. x 13 in. at any point on the route, rest it rigidly on his knee and examine at close range, a distance of some 126 miles. A detailed reference key inside the front cover of each section, explains the ... moresymbols used to delineate the route from aerodrome to aerodrome, the location of each aerodrome, landing grounds, prohibited areas, air corridors, overhead high tension cables and magnetic course. A lengthy list of the authorities referred to in creating the route map, cites sources from 1933 to 1944. The map is of civil aviation interest because of the heritage inherited from Imperial Airways but also military aviation interest because of the important role the route played in both the East& North African campaigns of World War II. It is from Smith's Atlas for Schools. Academies and Families by Roswell Smith(Hartford: Daniel Burgess& Co. 1835) a copy of the atlas title page is included for authenticity. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as seen in the main pic, photographed against a dark background. Overall, a very nice rare example, printed on a heavy page, blank on the reverse. Much different border configuration than today and shows some ... moreinteresting details such as the Mountains of Kong and the fictious Mountains of the moon. Overall, a very beautiful map with rich color that would frame up nicely. Size: The image area measures 8 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches(22x27cm) within the neat lines and the entire page measures 9 3/4 by 12(25x30cm) as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good condition printed on a light buff page. Blank on the reverse with original handcoloring. It is basically as seen in the pics. The bottom margin was a little ragged, not affecting the map area, and we have added a tab of antique paper of similar tone along the bottom to preserve it and make it better for framing, see the detail pics for more on condition, otherwise it is very clean with nice strong color.
