Various battles between the Ottoman and French forces under Napoleon are noted, including El Arish 1799, Ghizeh 1798, and Aboukir 1798, among others. Hall prepared that map in the declining days of the Ottoman Empire. After the conquest of Palestine by Muhammad Ali’s Egypt in 1832, British intervention returned control of Palestine to the Ottoman rulers in 1840. In Egypt, following the expulsion of the Napoleonic forces by the Ottoman Mamluk Turks, Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman viceroy of Egypt, established the Mamluk dynasty that would rule Egypt until the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. Between 1820 and 1833, Ali annexed northern Sudan, Syria and parts of Arabia into the Mamluk Empire. The map focuses on Morocco and the Mediterranean regions of Fez, Algeria, Tunisia and Tripoli and the ancient Greek and later Roman, Byzantine colony of Barca. It also shows the inland oasis Kingdom of Fezzan. Though mostly desert, 19th century Fezzan had numerous oases and supported a relatively large population. This desert kingdom was a critical stopping point for trade caravans crossing the Sahara since antiquity. This important still active caravan ... moreroute, with its string of Oases, is mapped out in some detail. The Tuat, a vast desert region, marked with numerous oases is also noted. De L'Isle is best known as a'scientific cartographer' whose work often set the standard for most subsequent maps of whatever region he focuses on. Description: This is a beautiful map of southern Africa from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. It covers modern day South Africa from Cape Voltas to Cape St. Lucia and includes the cities and towns of Tulbagh. Graaf Reynet, George, Somerset, Zwellendam, Albany, Beaufort, Cape Town, and Stellenbosch. Further north the map notes the'Countries inhabited by various tribes of the Hottentot race called Bosjemans or Bushmen' and marks countless Bushmen tribes, some of which include the Mahawpees, Amtimbe or Tambookie, Boholas, Corannas, Koras or Koraquas, etc. It also marks the boundary of the country inhabited by the Hottentot race. North beyond this boundary, Hall notes the region of the Barolongs and ... morethe Betjoana. The Karrikarri country consisting of immense plains and extensive forests is also identified. Southern Africa, a more pleasing climate to the Europeans, was at the time actively and aggressively being colonized by both the Dutch and the English. Here, the region is divided into various provinces including the British Cape District and Zwellendam, and the Dutch/ Afrikaans Territories of Stellenbosch and Graaf Reynet. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. Though this is hardly the first map to employ this type of border, it is possibly the earliest to use it on such a large scale. Description: This is a beautiful map of western Africa from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. It covers the entirety of western coast of Africa from River Zaire or Congo west through the Slave Coast. Gold Coast, Ivory Coast, Guinea, and north past the Grain Coast and Senegambia as far as the Bank of Arguin(Banc d'Arguin) Hall names numerous African tribes and nations throughout, and offers other interesting cartographic annotations such as the'source of the Niger River according to Mr. Park' Mungo Park, whose exploratory route is noted) and another'source of the Niger River according to Major Laing' near the Mountains of Loma. It offers interesting inland detail along the Niger River as ... morefar east as Timbuktu, with the'supposed direction of the Quorra or Niger' rendered somewhat correctly emptying into the Gulf of Guinea. West of Timbuktu the city of Walet(said to be larger than Timbuctoo) is also identified. The continent is partially bisected by the dramatic and mythical Mountains of Kong, which, based upon the explorations of Mungo Parks, were presumed to be the southern barrier to the Niger River valley. Hall to his credit reduces the Kong mountain range considerably over the expansive range depicted in earlier English maps by Thomson, Pinkerton, and others. To the east Lake Tchad(Chad) is well mapped. The supposed course of the River Shary is also noted just to the south of Lake Chad. This region was particularly important in the early 19th century as the source of most African slaves imported to the New World. Even so, at the time this map was made, the slave trade, thriving since the 5th century was rapidly diminishing due to decreased demand for slaves in the New World, the British outlawing of slavery in 1808, and subsequent diplomatic efforts including treaties with over 50 African rulers outlawing the practice. Large Antique 1893 Bacon Atlas Map of Northern AFRICA
A fine original 19th century antique map from G.W. Bacon. This listing: Africa North Sheet Provenance Commercial and Library Atlas of the World. Containing one hundred inset maps. Including all the latest discoveries, Extensive letterpress descriptions, Alphabetical index, Populations from the latest censuses, Gazetteer of 2,000 principal towns, Statistical diagrams and tables, etc. Edited by G.W. Bacon. F.R.G.S. Publisher London: G.W. Bacon& Co. Limited, 127 Strand. 1893. The maps for sale here are all at least 115 years old. I removed them from the damaged atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimeters(and inches) Sheet: 540 x 345(21 x 13½) Map: 480 X 300(18¾ x 11¾) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. There is a fold in the centre of each map. The ... moremaps are lithographs on heavy paper. The colors and still bright and fresh. The margins are generous. Condition The overall condition of the maps is very good/ excellent. There is the occasional spot in the margins of a few of the maps. And the occasional minor tear(always completely confined to the margins) has been professionally repaired. The photos included in the listings are of the actual maps you will receive. There is a small brownish mark on the left page of this map. Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal. From the Dutch Survey Published by Joannes Van Keulen. Description: A scarce 1794 nautical chart or maritime map of the Table Bay. South Africa, by Robert Laurie and James Whittle. Oriented to the east, this stunning map of the Table Bay, South Africa, covers from Blue Hill to Table Mountain, including Cape Town, Lyons Mount, Devils Mount, Table Valley, the Great Downs, and the notorious prison Robben Island. In the upper left quadrant there is a southward looking view of Cape Town, Table Mount, Devils Mount, and Lyons Mount drawn by Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille(1713- 1762) a well-respected French astronomer based in Cape Town. Elsewhere elevation is ... morerendered on profile. Laurie and Whittle derived the map from Sayer, whose operation they acquired in 1787. As noted in the title, Sayer derived the map from a much earlier 17th century plan by the Dutch East India Company chart maker Johannes van Keulen(1654-1715) This reference is mostly likely to Van Keulen's c. 1700 chart Kaart van de Tafel Baay. That Laurie and Whittle, publishing more than 100 years later, could not find a better source map emphasizes the pre-Admiralty paucity of cartographic and hydrographic information available to 18th century English navigators and chart publishers, even when the subject matter is a major colony and essential port-of-call on the all-important'round-Africa route to the East Indies. Sitting down to examine the two charts side by side reveals few updates- even the soundings, which naturally change over time, are nearly identical to the c. 1700 chart. New hydrographic surveys of Table Bay would not follow until the work of the Admiralty in the early 19th century.
