1704 Fine Morden Map of Africa
1704 Morden Map- Africa Robert Morden was a geographer and publisher in Cornhill. London in the late 1600's. He is probably best known for his contribution of large county maps to Camden's'Britannia' in 1695, which were re-issued at least three times through to the mid 1700's. However his best work was probably in miniature format with the issue of world maps in'Geography Rectified' in 1680(see King: Antique Miniature Maps pp 148-149) This was also re-issued three times as well as having the same maps used in early editions of Patrick Gordon's'Geography Anatomised' This lovely map of Africa comes from the 1704 edition of'Geography Anatomised' The map names the regions and kingdoms. There is detail to the major rivers, including the Niger, Congo, and the Nile which has its sources in two large ... morelakes south of the equator. Morden's name is noted in the title cartouche. The map measures 4.5" by 5" with one fold(as issued) And has outline hand colouring. There are good blank margins on three sides but the left blank margin was very narrow, this edge has been repaired with a strip of paper and tape is visible at the left border/margin. The title is displayed within a simple cartouche. With scales of German and Spanish miles. A further title, Barbarie" appears in the upper margin. An interesting early map of part of Northern Africa and the Mediterranean Sea, with Sicily, Cyprus, Sardinia, parts of Greece and Spain etc. Two inset detail maps cover part of Tunisia around present day Tunis and ancient Carthage, and the Nile Delta, Egypt. He and his friend and business associate Abraham Ortelius were responsible for the first atlases ever published. Mercator himself established the concept of the modern atlas although it was Ortelius who was to make first publication. Mercator's own atlas was published in 3 parts running up to 1595, with a number of following editions. His son Rumold and grandson Michael continued Gerard's work after his death in 1594. The plates were later aquired by Hondius who acted as publisher, but continued to credit Mercator as the cartographer. But the maps are changed only three times) The map is based on ... morePtolemy's Geography curated by Giacomo Gastaldi in 1548 and is one of the first maps of South Africa. The map was published for the first time in 1561 and then revised in 1574. While these editions are quite common, this edition of 1598 is very rare, and it differs from the previous ones for having been drawn with the addition of a sea monster. Alvin Jewitt Johnson was a prolific mapmaker of the 19th Century who recognized a need for quality American maps during it's period of rapid growth. Around 1859. Johnson purchased the engraved steel plates created by G.W. Colton and the copyrights for his maps. This map is from the Johnson and Browning Atlas of 1861, In his attempt to create an attractive. High-quality product to compete with the mapmakers of Europe, Johnson added ornate borders to the plates. He also continued to employ a staff of professional colorists to add the vivid hand applied washes to the lithographed maps.
