In 1635, the first two volumes of his planned world atlas, Atlas Novus or the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum were published. In 1636, Blaeu died and the business passed into the hands of his sons, Joan and Cornelis, who continued and expanded their father's ambitious plans. A wonderful. Offered here are two 1890 dated maps of Africa. One shows all of Central Africa and the other shows Morocco. Algeria and West Africa. The actual map measures approximately 11.5 by 26 inches and they were removed from the Library Reference Atlas of the World by John Bartholomew. Both maps are in good condition though there is crease down the center where the map was bound into the book. The white streak in some of my photos is the reflection from my flash. Can't seem to get rid of it. I have had some of these maps professional framed and they look great. If you are not satisfied, I will refund your money less shipping. Thomas JEFFERYS Map of South Africa Condition: The map is in excellent condition with good margins and is beautifully hand coloured Thomas Jefferys(1719-1771) was one of the leading English publishers of the eighteenth century. His career was distinguished and placed him at the forefront of cartographical endeavours at this time. Jefferys’ career began with an apprenticeship to Emanuel Bowen in 1735 where he was to learn his trade. Joining Thomas Kitchin in the workshop and he was able to specialise in map compilation and production from the very start of his career. From 1744 his independent career began to take off and Jefferys took on apprentices of his own; John Lodge and John Spilsbury being two noted examples. Jefferys’ first publications were maps for books and magazines as well as“The small English atlas” co-published with Kitchin ... morein 1748-1749. However. It was with his publication of a number of town plans(Noble& Butlin’s Northampton, Samuel Bradford’s plans of Coventry and Birmingham, and Isaac Taylor’s Wolverhampton, amongst others) that he really began to come to prominence in English mapping. In 1750 Jefferys moved to new premises at Charing Cross and it was from here that he was to issue some of the most important maps of the era. His career spanned the period of the Seven Years War and the political wrangling which preceded this war. The American Atlas: Or. This is a reference to the 1699 voyage of Jacques Barbot& John Grazilhier- at that time the delta port of New Calabar was the only port in the Bight of Biafra to which European slave trading vessels paid regular visits throughout the 17th century. A period where as historian Charles Rappleye has observed: In the West Indies in particular. But also in North and South America, slavery was the engine ... morethat drove the mercantile empires of Europe. The institution was as old as time- finding explicit sanction in the Bible, and in the glory days of Greece and Rome- and had flourished, in its modern form, for two hundred years. It appeared, in the eighteenth century, as universal and immutable as human nature. It is somewhat chilling to think that the chart was in fact compiled on the deck of a slave ship owned by Barbot.
