Where his work entailed examining and sketching various fortresses, that Mallet developed his cartographic interests. His most important work is his monumental five volume opus, Description de L'Univers. Published in 1683. This impressive work described the cultures, governments, lands, and customs of all the known ... morepeoples of the earth and included numerous maps and engravings. 1843 DUFOUR Map AFRICA Fascinating Statistical Table, Mysterious Interior, Rare!
Afrique 38 cm x 24 cm steelplate engraving. 41.5 cm x 26.5 sheet size, original hand colour, Jules Renouard, Paris, circa 1843 We are pleased to offer this elegantly designed map of Africa compiled by the French geographer and mapmaker Auguste Henri Dufour(1798-1865) for his atlas Le Globe- Atlas Classique Universel de Géographie Ancienne et Modern. A work that was published with updates for some 25 years in the mid-19th century. The plates were originally engraved in the mid 1830s by the Giraldon-Bovinet firm established by Edme Bovinet(1767-1832) and carried on by the engraver, globemaker and publisher Giraldon, who is best known today for his involvement in a over the publication of Louis Daguerre's pamphlet announcing his invention of the daguerreotype in 1839. The map presents a fascinating snapshot of European knowledge of ... morethe continent in the fourth decade of the 19th century. Or rather the lack thereof with regard to the interior. An extensive statistical table at left discusses the geography, geology, flora, fauna and peoples of the continent. Handsomely engraved with extremely delicate horizontal lines for littoral waters, the map features original full wash and outline hand colour in and will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. The map presents virtually no data regarding the Lakes Region with only Lake Malawi shown in tentative outline and speculative river courses- indeed John Speke would not become the first European to reach Lake Victoria for more than a decade after the map was published along with his visit to Lake Tanganyika with Richard Burton. A cryptic notation is presented regarding the point where an unnamed expedition stopped in 1842: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Gibraltar south to Accra on the Gold Coast as seen below measures just 9 cm actual size: Condition- Please note carefully: This ~ 170-year-old map is in very good condition as can be ascertained from photos. 1823 Manuscript Map of Africa
1823 Manuscript Map of Africa WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Africa. Description: An unusual and beautiful semi-manuscript map of the Africa dating to 1823. The printed portions of this map follow the cartography of James Wyld and include the basic outlines of the countries. Latitude and longitude lines, the Tropic of Capricorn, the Equator, and the Meridian of London. The remainder of the map, including all textual labels and color work, had been completed in manuscript, that is to say, hand drawn. Wyld most likely produced this map intentionally without labels for use as a classroom workbook by which children could learn geography by filling in the blanks. The manuscript geographical data and detail throughout is altogether outstanding. The work is completed in a fine hand adept at decorative text and the rendering ... moreof rivers and mountains. The geography follows the conventions of the period. Africa is transected by a large apocryphal mountain range identified as the Mountains of Kong in the west and the Mountains of the Moon in the east. Both ranges were speculated as possible sources for Africa's great river systems, the Niger and the Nile, respectively. Although the cartographer makes little attempt to map the interior in serious detail, reflecting the general lack of European knowledge of the region, some areas are represented more thoroughly than others. These include the Senegambia, Egypt Nubia and Abyssinia, the Congo, South Africa, and the Lands of Monomotapa and Mozambique. Lake Malawi is illustrated in an embryonic but largely accurate form. Throughout various tribal nations are noted. An altogether unique and wonderful one of a kind find. Size: Printed area measures 14.5 inches high by 17.5 inches wide. Condition: Very Good. Partial manuscript. Original centerfold. Platemark visible. Wide margins. Shipping: Items are shipped within three business days of receiving payment. 1892 Rand McNally Map of Africa
1892 Rand McNally Map of Africa WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Map of Africa. Description: This is a beautiful example of Rand McNally and Company's 1892 map of Africa. It covers the entire continent from the Mediterranean Sea to the Cape of Good Hope. Including the island of Madagascar. Parts of adjacent Arabia and Europe are also included. Insets feature the Suez Canal, the Cape Verde Islands, the Cargados Carayos, and Mascarene Islands. Lake Victoria(Lake Nyanza) Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi(Lake Nyassa) are identified. During this period, most of Africa, except for Abyssinia and Liberia, was dominated by European colonial powers. In southern Africa, after the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and gold in 1884, colonial powers and the indigenous population struggled for control of resources. This led to ... morethe First Boer War in 1880 in which the British were defeated. The British were however victorious in the Second Boer War. After Berlin Conference of 1884– 1885, the continent was formally divided in spheres of influence setting boundaries of colonial control. It was only after the end of the Second World War that these colonial territories would become fully independent. Color coded according to region, Rand McNally's map identifies numerous cities, tribes, and towns, as well as noting oases, rivers, deserts, mountains and various other topographical details, with relief shown by hachure. Though the interior is labeled'Unexplored Region' it does offer a surprising wealth of detail regarding tribal lands and the names of important chiefs. Colton moreover includes speculative mappings of the Congo and a number of other African river systems. View of Tunis Coast of Barbary 1778 Cooke antique engraved print
View of Tunis Coast of Barbary 1778 Cooke antique engraved print A View of Tunis on the Caost of Barbary Issued 1778. London by Cooke Engraved for Middleton's Complete System of Geography Printed in the 18th century England. On quality hand-made rag paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Created to illustrate a voyage of exploration and discovery across the world to the Southern Ocean and Pacific region. In the 18th century. Engraved illustrations such as this one were the primary method by which a person could see images of far away and exotic places. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics of discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. These"popular" types of prints were often sold individually and as part of illustrated travel accounts. All of which are ... morenow scarce and valuable today. They are much sought after as a visual record of a bygone era and are great conversational items once framed for display. When you stop to consider their age and the fact they are original engraved works of art. It's amazing how affordable they actually are. What is also very interesting is that many of these views were continually re-engraved over time. So that while titles may be identical, in fact the engraved plate may be an entirely different one. This means there are likely numerous variants for each image, something which will reveal itself with close comparision between the prints. In Good+ or better condition. Some light small staining, minor paper wrinkling and age wear, small paper adhesion above title word"Barbary" most of which is visible in the photos[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually attractive. A pleasing impression of an interesting 18th century engraved image. Well worthy of display. Any small defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. iscra antique maps& prints'Mappa Geographica Exhibens Religionem Catholicam Alicubi per Africam Sparsam' Description: A scarce map of Africa by the Jesuit Heinich Scherer. Printed in ca. 1705. The Christian theme of this map is boldly presented in the graphic illustration of the Crucifixion above the map's key. The map itself is a fine example of the state of geographic knowledge(or lack thereof) at the beginning of the 18th century. The continent is presented with a fairly accurate coastline, but most of the interior is entirely fictional. The Nile is shown in the traditional manner with its source in the large southern lakes of Zaflan and Zembre. The Zembre, also labeled Lac Zaire, spawns the Congo and Zaire Rivers as well. The locations of Catholic churches and missions are shown. Some sea monsters and a large ship with ... morea cross on its sail fill the Indian Ocean.
