Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of parts of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida- North America XIII) by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Map pages from the The Twentieth Century Peerless Atlas and Pictorial Gazetteer The book was published in 1901. The maps are generally not individually marked with a copyright date. Large m ap of Louisiana or Mississippi States are on opposite sides of atlas page. Original page measures 11" X 13-1/2" Most of the maps in this book do not show copyright dates. However, those that do show dates were copyrighted between 1895 and 1899. + + + There is some typical darkening from age and handling around the edges of the pages. This offering features an original antique one-page. Highly detailed, multi-color map of LOUISIANA with an equal-sized high-quality map of MISSISSIPPI on the back. The maps were rescued from Gaskell's Atlas of the World, published in 1888, and which was in unsalvageable condition. The last two photos validate the origin of the maps and the publishing date. The maps were specially engraved for inclusion in this Gaskell atlas and are contemporary with the publishing date. Both the Louisiana and Mississippi maps have excellent and varied coloring. An interesting design feature is the use of gray and black tones in the coloring of water in the Gulf of Mexico. Both maps have a page size of 11" wide x 13-1/2" long.
