This auction is for the Kansas and Missouri 2-state map from the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in very nice condition given its age. It is in its original unrestored condition. The colors(all hand colored) are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very readable. This map does have some staining, especially along the edges. A few of these may extend into the map slightly but they should not detract from the map. The seam is very much intact and is very good shape. I have tried to highlight all these main issues in the pictures. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. I do have the entire book(covers are in very poor ... morecondition) but it has already been split up. I will be posting a few sections at a time but they are in a pretty random order as I don't really know much about which may be more desirable. The printed map is slightly smaller. These are all original, hand painted maps that are two pages from the Johnson's Family Atlas that appear to be expertly spliced together. These maps are very old and somewhat brittle, and some may have tears and minor spotting. An ORIGINAL antique 1864 map of MISSOURI and KANSAS from JOHNSON'S New Illustrated FAMILY ATLAS. The counties are individually hand water colored and a handful of early railroads are shown crossing Missouri at the time. Only the eastern 1/3 of KANSAS is shown as the western half was still largely INDIAN land at the time. What makes Johnson's maps so desirable is that although many maps from this time period showed railroad routes. His also show major stagecoach and wagon roads. This map shows hundreds of these roads, and in Western Kansas the route of the SANTA FE TRAIL and the PROPOSED PACIFIC RAILROAD are shown. In addition 3 engraved vignettes show FIRE ON THE PRAIRIE, Indians SPEARING FISH, and a scene of SANTA FE FROM THE GREAT MISSOURI TRAIL.
