This is one of the rarest and most desirable states of the Johnson’s Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas map. In this example Nebraska is drawn with a long panhandle extending from Iowa all the way to Fremont’s Peak. To the north, Dakota is a massive and newly partitioned territory extending from Minnesota to the Rocky Mountains and from Nebraska to the border with British Columbia. Shows an embryonic Colorado with a few towns and North Park, Middle Park and South Park noted. This map also notes the three routes proposed for the Pacific Railroad: the Governor Stevens route through Dakota, the Lieutenant Beswith route through Nebraska, and the Captain Gunnison route through Colorado and Kansas. The map references various American Indian Nations throughout as well as countless geographical features including mountains, lakes, passes, rivers, rapids, etc. Features the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. The income from the atlas as well as a significant inheritance enabled Vandermaelen to found the Brussels Geographic Institute along the Chaussée de Gand and Charleroi Canal(along with two adjacent and rather opulent homes for Vandermaelen and his brother) the library of which housed the only example of the giant globe ever constructed from the plates of the atlas. Employing a team of draughtsmen, lithographers and geographers Vandermaelen's Institute continued producing maps of all types throughout his life- nearly 5000 published maps in all. Antique 1914 Map of Nebraska and Kansas
This is an original map of Nebraska and Kansas cut from Hammond's Handy Atlas of the World with New Census. A book published in 1914. The map of Kansas is on page 51(the front) and Nebraska is on page 52(the back) so only one state can be viewed at a time. The map is just slightly under 6"x8" and fits perfectly into a 6"x8" frame. The frame is not included. I bought the book to frame a few of the states to put on my own wall and thought others might like to do the same. I'm also selling other maps from the book. 1894 Nebraska Kansas & Missouri State Maps Rand McNally Standard Atlas Of World
Important Note# 1: These 4 original Rand McNally maps share 3 pages removed from an atlas. Therefore it will be impossible to mount or even view all four maps at once. There are several possible combinations to choose from but the two large Nebraska and Kansas maps cannot both be mounted. Only one can be because of the fact that the 4 maps share only 3 pages. Included are 3 pages or sheets: Page 1. Side A. Nebraska. West half of map Side B. South Dakota. Complete map Page 2. Side A. Kansas. West half of map Side B. Nebraska. East half of map Page 3. Side A. Kansas. East half of map Side B. Missouri. Complete map Important Note# 2: This atlas was printed with a large gap between the map halves on facing pages. This required careful cutting of both halves to eliminate the gap. The halves have been neatly cut so they mesh well at the joint. ... moreThe printing of the maps was not entirely exact but they are quite good at the joint considering. The Nebraska& Kansas maps are each in two halves. Mounting or viewing requires placing 2 halves together so there is a joint in the middle. The Kansas map includes a third narrow strip so there are two joints. This original map has been removed from an 1894 or perhaps later Rand McNally Standard Atlas Of The World. The atlas was found with heavy damage and missing portions at the front end of the book. It was not usable as is. However most of the map section was still intact and I have chosen to salvage the maps and offer them individually here. The entire front end of the atlas is missing except for the front cover. So it's difficult to pinpoint the exact date of publication. While I believe the atlas was published in 1894, it's possible it could have been published a year or two later. Grover Cleveland is listed as the serving President, his second term 1893- Rand McNally does not appear to have updated their maps on a regular basis.
