Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his successors and son were one of the most prominent publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell Senior began his map publishing career in the early1830s. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers H. S. Tanner and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchells Universal Atlas and the Mitchells General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps. Until Mitchells son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr, purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. The younger Mitchell became as prominent as his father and published atlases well into the late 1880s when most of the copyrights were again sold. Augustus Mitchell click image to enlarge This beautifully hand coloured original antique map was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the 1870 edition of his large New General Atlas- dated at the foot of the map. These county. State, city& country maps are some of the most ornate and beautifully coloured maps published in the US in the 19th century. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and their successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. Size: The map image measures approximately 11 1/2 by 14 inches on a 12 1/4 by 15 1/4" page(31x39cm) with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Fair to Good condition for its age. Printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are some handling smudges, a couple of spots on the map and slight edge wear as seen in the pics, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that would frame up well. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. It has the Texaco logo on it and the saying paper is precious please do not throw this map away which harkens back to the days of frugality during wwII. Mitchell was born in 1792 in Connecticut and spent some of his early working years as a teacher. During his teaching years. He became quite dissatisfied with the available textbooks, and this led him to become a writer and publisher. He moved to Philadelphia, a major center for publishing at the time, and issued A New American Atlas in 1831 from existing plates. At this time, Mitchell began ... morehis collaboration with J.H. Young, who was the main compiler, draftsman and engraver for the Mitchell company into the 1860s The Mitchell company was one of the first to try out the new technique of engraving on steel plates. Experimenting with steel almost 20 years before the rest of the publishing industry. He was printing with steel in the early 1830's; the general switch to steel was approximately 1850. During the early years of the company, Mitchell published mainly maps and travel guides until 1846, when he acquired the copyright to Tanner's New Universal Atlas. In 1846, the company also switched to steel engraving as their primary means of printing. The New Universal Atlas was published until 1859. In 1860, it was replaced by Mitchell's New General Atlas, and Mitchell Sr. retired and turned the business over to his son of the same name. The New General Atlas was published until 1893. Other Mitchell atlases include the School Atlas(1839-1886) and the Ancient Atlas, Classical and Sacred(1844-1874) The firm continued publishing into the 1890's and, at its height, employed 250 people and sold 400,000 publications per year.
