Size: The map image measures approximately 11 by 14 inches on a 12 1/2 by 15 1/4" page with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good condition. Basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There is There are some binding holes along the left edge of the margin, otherwise the map image is very clean with a desired antique apearance that would frame up nicely. Map is printed on the scale of 1/2" = 1 Mile) The map is dated 1904 of the face(see third scan below) The overall sheet size is about 15.25" x 18.25" The size within the printed"Ears of Corn" border is about 13.75" x 17" Map is too large for my 11" x 17" tabloid scanner; so it was scanned in two passes and then assembled electronically. There are some scanner lines visible in the scan. The writing is in pencil however as it has the date written on front. The 1889 is better but has 1889 in pen marks. This was put out by Butlers complete geography and was engraved by W.H. Holmes. Experimenting with steel almost 20 years before the rest of the publishing industry. He was printing with steel in the early 1830's; the general switch to steel was approximately 1850. During the early years of the company, Mitchell published mainly maps and travel guides until 1846, when he acquired the copyright to Tanner's New Universal Atlas. In 1846, the company also switched to steel engraving as their primary means of printing. The New Universal Atlas was published until 1859. In 1860, it was replaced by Mitchell's New General Atlas, and Mitchell Sr. retired and turned the business over to his son of the same name. The New General Atlas was published until 1893. Other Mitchell atlases include the School Atlas(1839-1886) and the Ancient Atlas, Classical and Sacred(1844-1874) The firm continued publishing into the 1890's and, at its height, employed 250 people and sold 400,000 publications per year.
