Vintage Abilene. Texas Brick The Abilene Brick Company was started in 1917 and is responsible for making the building blocks of countless Abilene structures. ... moreThe first brick plant of record was on the banks of either the Catclaw or Big Elm Creek in the early 1890s. The other brick companies were the Russell. Winter and Miller Brick Company, the J. B. Reese Brick Company and the R. C. Peonce Brick Company. The Abilene Pressed Brick Company operated a short time before selling to Edd and Steve Powers in 1917. Edd and Steve Powers ran the plant until Steve was accidentally shot at the plant on Christmas Day 1922. Edd bought Steve’s share and ran it as the Abilene Press Brick Company until he went broke in 1930. The plant was idle until 1936 when Edd’s son. Paul, managed to borrow enough money to reopen the plant. They changed the name to the Abilene Brick Company and operated it many years. The plant has since been dismantled and the machinery sold. Due to an apparent clogged press mold. The" I" in the word" ABILENE" is obscured. Abilene brick measures = 7-5/8" x 3-5/8" x 2-1/4" No International Sales or Shipping* Shipping costs may be reduced. Thurber, Texas Antique Brick
Bricks and the Decline of Thurber. Texas William Knox Gordan. Seeing potential in the shale mud found in Thurber, persuaded company president R.D. Hunter to build a brick plant in 1897. The bricks became popular all over the state, and the orders kept the plant running day and night to produce millions of bricks for many Texas buildings and highways, including Old Bankhead Highway(US 80) Austin's Congress Avenue, Fort Worth's Camp Bowie Boulevard, and the Galveston Seawall. The plant closed in 1931. By 1936, the town had been abandoned, and many of the buildings were dismantled. It had quickly become a ghost town. Today. Only about 6 original buildings still stand in Thurber, including the old Mercantile building(built with solid Thurber brick, of course) that now houses the famous SmokeStack Restaurant, and the 128-foot-tall smokestack ... morefrom the second electric power plant built in 1909, which gives the restaurant its name. Bricks are recycled more than any other construction material used in an historic structure. If a house burns or falls down from neglect, the bricks were gathered up by others and moved to another site for some specific use. Houston, Texas Antique Brick
Houston Brick& Tile Co. Houston. Texas Houston Brick and Tile Company is an abandoned mine located in Houston. Texas. This mine was operated by Houston Brick& Tile Company and primarily produced fire clay. Houston. Texas is a city whose very existence has always depended on wild speculation and boom-and-bust excess. Founded on a muddy mire in 1837 by two real estate-booster brothers from New York– their dream was to establish it as the capital of the new Republic of Texas– Houston was soon superseded by the more promising site of Austin. Even while somehow establishing itself as a commercial center. Oil, discovered in 1901, became the foundation, along with cotton and real estate, of vast private fortunes, and over the next century wildly wealthy philanthropists poured cash into swanky galleries and showpiece skyscrapers. That colossal ... moreself-confidence helped Houston. Houston has also developed a small but growing workforce eager to bring alternative energy to scale. While several mega-churches headquartered downtown– with celebrity pastors like the non-denominational Joel Olsteen– have become powerful social, cultural, and, in some cases, political forces. Some churches draw as many as 16,000 people to their Sunday services, which are open to the public. There are also several highly regarded medical centers in the city. The fourth-largest city in the United States. Houston is an ungainly beast of a place. Choked with successive rings of highways and high on humidity. Despite this, its sheer energy, its relentless Texas pride, and above all, its refusal to take itself totally seriously, lends it no small appeal. Antique Vintage Seguin Texas TX Stamped Red Brick Great Old History!
One nice old used brick. Presumably made in Seguin Texas. Use your discretion. Approx. 8 1/4 long x 3 3/4 wide x 2 1/4 high. Photos show all of its charm, patina and character. It looks like it may have been in a fire some time after being made into a brick. It is darker in real life. The flash washed it out a bit. Thurber, Texas - Bricks and the Decline of Thurber Antique Brick
Thurber. Texas- Bricks and the Decline of Thurber William Knox Gordan. Today. Only about 6 original buildings still stand in Thurber, including the old Mercantile building(built with solid Thurber brick, of course) that now houses the SmokeStack Restaurant, and the 128-foot-tall smokestack ... morefrom the second electric power plant built in 1909, which gives the restaurant its name. Bricks made in Thurber were also used to build the seawall at Galveston after the disastrous hurricane of 1900. To pave the streets of Ft. Worth and even Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas. The Brick Tile& Terracotta Union(BTT) symbol impressed in a triangle was a union symbol for the Brick Tile& Terracotta Workers of America dating from 1903 when Thurber became a union town. On this brick. The name“THURBER” is faintly visible on the face of the brick Thurber brick measures = 8" x 3-3/4" x 3" No International Sales or Shipping* Shipping costs may be reduced.
