The block is made of solid, chestnut, and has a dark stain. The lovely geometric design featured on the face of the block was hand-carved. Also note that chestnut is a rare and valuable wood; it’s not commercially available due to the blight introduced between 1900& 1908. Which made the North American chestnut trees virtually extinct by 1940. There are a couple cracks stemming from the bottom edge of the block. We wanted to try to close them using some glue and clamps. But they add a nice, distressed charm to it and preferred to leave the decision up to you.
