Unusual Bronze Original Arts & Crafts Dragon Wall Light Fitting, Sconce, Gothic
This is a very unusual Arts and Crafts wall light sconce featuring a mythical beast such as a coiling dragon or sea serpent. It has a small wings and a scaly body. The light fitting is made of bronze and has a brassed coating. It is very gothic in style and is approx. 23 cm( 9 inches) long. I would say it dates from the late 19th century when electricity became available in some homes. The fitting doesn't appear to be a conversion from gas although the brass bulb holder may be a replacement. There is a small old crack at the very base of the tail. This does not go right through and does not affect the stability of the sconce in any way. A line can be seen near the part which goes in to the wall, this may have occurred during casting, it is not damage. There is still some paint on this part. I have for auction this stunning french glass pendant light with a gilt bronze fitting. It will date to the 1920s, it was found in a house clearance here in the South of France. I am no expert when it comes to glass. So I am not sure what this type of glass is called, it is very beautiful a nd seems to change colour in different lights. It is slightly clear with a cloudy effect that also takes on a slight bluey colour, please see all my photo's. I adore the pretty wavy/frilly edge and the dimpled design of the glass. Antique FLYING CHERUB Double Glass CRYSTAL Gesso Ceiling Light Fitting
Flying Cherub Chandelier This is a super architectural item. It is an original flying gesso cherub. Holding not one but two cut glass crystal chandeliers. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE PICTURES The cherub measures 330 mm(13 inches) from head to toe and the arm width is 250 mm(10 inches) The drops are made up of two sections. A round top bead and a long faceted piece. The wiring and holders are original. Which shows that this is a true period piece, not a modern reproduction. The cherub has a chain to hang it from and I have included a ceiling rose, which is more modern, but has to be better than a white plastic one! The wiring will need replacing before use. I have just replaced on small piece which was missing. I estimates it dates from the 1950's. It will need some work on the wire links before final fitting. Most are loose and will need bending into place, a few may need replacing. This is best done once a permanent place if found for it. For the photographs I hooked them through loosely. The plate is 4.5inches high and 2.5inches wide. It is 8inches long from the hinged mechanism. The'screw' element is not very high. The male threaded pipes have an are about 3/8" across. The interior diameter of the female ends is also 3/8" So they fit together well. The longer curved pipe is about 5 1/2" long including the threaded end. The shut off valve has one end that isn't threaded and measures 3 5/8" long and about 2 1/2" high. The valve is hard to turn by hand, so it may need some oil. These both have a nice vintage patina and haven't been polished up. Please see pics for details.
