Rare Louis Sullivan Stock Exchange Sash Handle
Louis Sullivan Window Pull From The Chicago Stock Exchange This auction is for one hard-to-find Louis Sullivan-designed window pull from the demolished Chicago Stock Exchange building. Produced by Yale& Towne Mfg. Co. for the firm of Adler& Sullivan. These pulls graced windows in the landmark building from its construction in 1894 until its demolition in 1972. This handle was salvaged from the building during demolition. Located at 30 N. LaSalle in Chicago, the building was 13 stories tall with 480 offices and a beautifully-designed trading room that was reconstructed in its entirety in the Art Institute of Chicago. These commercial-sized window pulls are also in that room at the museum. The Yale& Towne shamrock-shaped stamp is visible on the reverse of the handle(as seen in the third photo) The building was the firm's largest ... morecommission after the Auditorium building. He was married to Leonor Kretzer Sullivan. Sullivan was born in Sedalia and moved to St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 13. He attended parochial schools in Sedalia and St. Louis and graduated from Saint Louis University in 1918. During World War I he enlisted in the Army and served as a private in the infantry. He received his law degree from Saint Louis University School of Law in 1922 and began working in private practice. He also became active in state and local politics. From 1936 to 1938 he served as associate city counselor in St. Louis and from 1938 to 1940 he served as secretary to Mayor Bernard F. Dickmann. In 1940 he was elected to Congress. He was defeated in a bid for re-election in 1942, but was again elected to Congress in 1944. He was again defeated in 1946, but made another come-back in 1948. In 1950 he was re-elected. He died January 29, 1951 and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis. In 1952 his widow Leonor Sullivan was elected to Congress and served until her retirement in 1976. This is an ORIGINAL item. Architect Louis Sullivan's Balustrade Screen from Carson Pirie Scott
This is an original piece of the balustrade screen from the Carson Pirie Scott building(1897) in Chicago designed by famed Chicago School Architect Louis Sullivan. The piece is made of cast iron and was originally painted to look like oxidized bronze. THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION. Dimensions: Height 40.2 in. Width 9.7 in. Depth 1.4 in. Height 102.2 cm. Width 24.7 cm. Depth 3.5 cm. Weight: Approx. 30 lbs. yes. It is cast iron) This piece was purchased from an architecture antique store in Chicago about 20 years ago. You will often find any remaining balustrade pieces in museums. This piece is not perfect. It has a couple small cracks(see photos) But nothing is loose. It also has a few small bits chipped off(see photos) No restoration has been attempted with this piece. There are a couple of small paint drops on the iron when the hand rails were ... morebeing painted in later years. Again. This piece is made of brittle cast iron. For almost 100 years it had been kicked and hit with broom and mop handles. This piece is not in perfect condition. That being said, few of these pieces are, including those seen in museums. Antique Chicago Prairie School Architecture Terracotta Element as Louis Sullivan
This handsome yellow ware terra cotta decorative block measures 8 3/8” square x 4 ¼” deep and has an excellent creamy white glaze with lots of age crazing. Its face bears a geometric design inspired by the early designs of Louis Sullivan and it comes from a pre-1920 Chicago structure that was demolished over 20 years ago. It has since resided in the garden of the consignor who is in the process of moving. The proper left side has a loss and bears mold numbers. You will note chips in the glaze on corners and edges. Louis Sullivan Designed Metal Arch from Holy Trinity Cathedral. Chicago, 1903. Museum Quality 5' 6" Wide. Sides with flanges 12" Top peak to bottom of arch 8" Weighs 85 pounds. This piece is straight and ridged with some original paint intact. There is weathering and one of the side flanges has been damaged(see images) It is marked 350 in grease pen. I'm not sure what that references. Please see all pictures and I will do my best to describe this piece and also share all I've researched. As you can see in the images a painted piece was on display in the Louis Sullivan's Ideas exhibition held at the Chicago Cultural Center from June 26 through November 26. 2010. The backing is 4.5 inches thick with a 2.5 inch projection off the face. Mostly all hand sculptured, the glaze is in outstanding condition. Here is a signed 1957 letter from Daniel Catton Rich. Director of the Art Institute of Chicago. It is a thank you letter for someone lending out a bronze medallion for a Louis Sullivan exhibition. A biography of Rich can be found on the Art Institute website, he was also an author and spent time as president of Poetry magazine. It is 8.5" x 7.25" and is dated October 8 1957. This is a rare February 27th. 1949 playbill from the Post-Broadway engagement of the ALAN JAY LERNER and FREDERICK LOEWE musical"BRIGADOON" at the American Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri. The production opened March 13th, 1947 at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City and ran for 581 performances before going on the road.
