ANTIQUE CHURCH BELL WHEEL WOOD 1800'S MARYLAND CIVIL WAR AMERICAN FOLK ART
This traditional bell ringing wheel is certainly a rare find these days. With a groove on the outside. The rope would fit in this space for ringing. In fact while searching the internet for a similar item I can across two, both in England with very high price tags, selling for about $350.00 US dollars. This wheel came from a local church that will be torn down soon. The church stands on the same road that General Lee used to retreat from the Gettysburg Campaign. I've been told it is at least 150 years old. This piece measures approximately 52" in diameter and has layers of wood joined by nails. In very good condition I only notice one small wedge of wood missing. Please look at all photos carefully and use the close-up zoom for best look. Because of size this will be local pick-up only. We are located outside of Hagerstown, Maryland, ... moreabout 1 hour west of Baltimore and Washington,D.C. and 1 hour south of Harrisburg, PA. This would make a great piece of American Folk Art as it has a great shape, form, color and patina. Thanks for looking and Check out my other items! Civil War Era wood/metal wheelchair handhewn spoked wheels Steampunk Reenactment
This is by far my most unusual auction. Living right here in Civil War land. York PA; 30 minutes from Gettysburg, I found these to be especially interesting. This auction is for two oak wheels with cast iron races from a wheelchair made during the Civil War Era. The gentleman who owned them prior to me. Had the whole chair but it had met with an unfortunate accident in years prior. He did salvage the wheels however. The following link shows a chair with similar wheels to these. http:civilwarrx.blogspot.com/2013/04/civil-war-wheelchairs.html Each wheel is hand crafted from oak with cast iron races. The hand rim measures 24" diameter and the riding wheel 28" in diameter. When they are assembled with the iron axle. The length or height is 29" Please look closely at these wheels. The center hub is covered in what appears to be ... morea zinc canning lid. The wheelchair that these came from was well used. If only they could talk. There are a couple of repaired splits and tape marks. Also. I left the tape on the hand rail wheels. It appears it may have been used for traction. Awesome looking table or other steampunk decor. Great for reenactments. As well. Please ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them. Posted with
