The atlas was published in a very limited context to be distributed to government officials in the three houses of government as a reference for assessing the Civil War. This is from the original first publishing, that lasted from 1891-5. In general, these maps are very detailed showing lines of approach, battle formations, forts, batteries, dates, various armies and officers involved, topography down to houses in many cases and other details and historical notes. The Union lines are in blue and the Confederate in Red. A very beautiful map that will frame up nicely! Size: The map image measures 16 by 27 inches on a page measuring approximately 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing. It is a full double page sheet as issued. Condition: The map sheet is in Good to Very Good condition with overall light tonal aging. Blank on the reverse, printed on heavy pliable paper with a centerfold as issued. There are a couple of minor nicks out of the edge, split at the top of the centerfold margin only, and a short edge tear, otherwise it is very clean on strong paper that would frame up nicely. This auction is for a soil map of: Upshur County West Virginia Each map is roughly 3’ x 4’ or more depending on the size of the county represented. The maps are dated between the years 1904- 1905. Each map was designed to be folded to about 5” x 9” and stored in a box of other maps. This comes from a lot of soil maps retired by the University of Minnesota. Each map is in decent shape and any defects are attempted to be noted by the photo. If you have any questions. Please ask. Some maps do have small tears resulting in a“star shape” between the creases of the folding, but this does not mean any paper or information is lost. This highway map was published by the state of West Virginia to encourage tourism. The age does not appear on the map. But because Jay Rockefeller was Governor, it had to have been published during his time in that office, which was 1976- 1984. It is a detailed map. Although of course now out of date. This is a huge Black and White COPY( No Color) of an original 1861 Map titled: Map showing DISTRIBUTION OF SLAVES in the SOUTHERN STATES Projected& Compiled by A Von Steinwehr This map shows the breakdown of slave-ownership by each county/area with the darker color indicating a higher percentage of slaves. The map includes a smaller depiction of where the majority of cotton production occurred. The map thus shows the extent of the slave system before the war. Von Steinwehr was German-born general in the Union Army who fought at many of the war’s prominent battles. Including the First Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Gettysburg.
