ITEM: Up for sale is this antique vintage coal mining map from the Susquehanna Collieries(Susquehanna Coal Company) and dated 1924. The map measures approx. 23 x 8 inches. Previously folded, and will be shipped folded as it was found. The paper is a kind of vellum with a waxy type back on it, similar to old blueprints from this time period. Includes a typed description of the area. The bottom right corner states: Susquehanna Collieries Co. Shamokin Division. HITSORY: In April 1867. The Pittston Railroad and Coal Company acquired more than 6,000 acres of coal lands along the Susquehanna River in and around Nanticoke, in the rich coalfields ... moreof the Wyoming Valley in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Only two years later, in 1869, the Pennsylvania Railroad acquired the Pittston Railroad and Coal Company and changed its name to the Susquehanna Coal Company. The new company’s 6,000 acres of coal lands were on both sides of the Susquehanna River at Nanticoke Dam, where traces of its mining are still visible today. During the next half-century men working in its deep mines and sloping shafts took literally millions of tons of hard black Anthracite coal from beneath the ground. Then, in 1913, the Pennsylvania Railroad began consolidating and selling its Susquehanna stock and property to the Susquehanna Collieries Company, a subsidiary of the M. A. Vernon was founded in 1905 and boomed by 1907 along with Goldfield and other famous Nevada mining regions. But collapsed after the Panic of 1907 when mining speculation by the New York curb stock brokers went flat subsequent to the Panic. HERES A LITTLE INFO THAT I FOUND: The coal fields on Broad Top Mountain were first documented in the 1830s by the First Geographic Survey of Pennsylvania. The area at that time was occupied by a few pioneers. Some of whom mined the coal. William Houck, for example, settled in the Robertsdale area in the 1830s and opened a mine that later ... morebecame the first Rockhill Iron and Coal Company Mine. Mining did not prove profitable in the isolated region for lack of an efficient way to transport the product to market. This changed by the 1850s when the Pennsylvania Railroad was constructed and a spur line, the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad, began hauling coal from the fields on the west side of the mountain. The east side of the mountain was unaffected by the successful operations on the west side. The East Broad Top Railroad and Coal Company was chartered in 1856 but funding to build the line that would connect the fields on the east side of the mountain to the Pennsylvania Railroad at Mt. Union was not secured until 1872. By this time several Philadelphia businessmen. Edward and Algernon Roberts, Richard D. Wood, Ario Pardee, and Gillingham Fell, had purchased about 11,000 acres of the coal rich land on the east side of Broad Top Mountain including William Houck's land. In partnership with Percival Dewees, owner of an iron furnace at Rockhill, they formed the Rockhill Iron and Coal Company. Rockhill is approximately 15 miles northeast of Robertsdale. The Leadville Mining District claims map compiled by Chas. F. Saunders from Official Records and Other Reliable Sources. January 1901. The scale is 1200 ft to the inch. This map is in excellent condition with only the slightest fraying on the edges. It measures 32" x 44" from edge to edge. The district is outlined by a black border. Offered here is an original Map of Secondary-South Entry to Mine No. 12 of the McAlester Coal Mining Company. Buck, I.T. Indian Territory) Map and survey dated 1903, and shows the apparent location of miners bodies found after a fatal underground explosiion. Map measures 22.0 x 18.0 when unfolded. Will be carefully shipped in original folded condition. Underground coal mine explosions are, and were, an all to common event from the buildup of methane gas. 1850 North Carolina Framed Map Pre Civil War Charlotte Gold Mining Region EX NR!
Here's one of two North Carolina Pre-Civil War maps that have matching frames that we are currently listing. This one was printed by the famous Philadelphia. Pennsylvania engraver and mapmaker Thomas Cowperthwait and is marked to be registered in 1850. It is titled A New Map of NTH Carolina with it's Canals, Roads and Distances from Place to Place, along the Stage and Steam Boat routes. At this point in history and particularly in the wilderness of the Carolinas, the best mode of transportation was the waterways with the railroad being new. This one has a box dedicated to the gold mining region showing the now major city of Charlotte in it's infancy. It runs from the Great Catawba River to Wadesboro and the Little River. Another box shows depth levels with tidal information and is titled Profile of Dismal Swamp Canal(mosquito ... morerepellant was not invented in the yet) A third box shows the Craven area of the Neuse river. The map reads to be published by TC& Co No 253 Market St, Philadelphia. Another interesting aspect is the longitude lines are showing East and West of Washington not the standard Greenwich. The map measures 13" by 15-1/2" to the outside of the decorative border. The frame is made of wood and has a bluish green or greenish blue color over gold. It has a slight washed look to make it look antiqued but I Don't know the age of the frame, it could be arts and crafts. These maps were the standard of the time period before the Civil War when plantations where still thriving and the political atmosphere of the country was changing. The maps. Even for the south and southern states would have been manufactured and printed in the north due to the better technology and industry of the time. These maps would look great in an office for a surveyor, government official, historian, or history professor or teacher for a school or college. There is a couple folds, and some of the archival tape is coming loose in the back, and on the very center upper fold there is a little 1/2" tear, which with the archival tape, would be fixed, and never seen.
