It is from the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Published by the Secretary of War, Washington: Government Printing Office, 1891-1895) undoubtedly the most complete set of accurate maps of the Civil War ever published. The title of the atlas appears in the top left margin and plate number in the upper right. A copy of the title page is included with all the publishing details for authenticity. The atlas was published in a very limited context to be distributed to government officials in the three houses of government as a reference for assessing the Civil War. This is from the original first publishing, that lasted from 1891-5. Size: The map image measures 16 by 27 inches on a page measuring approximately 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing. It is a full double page sheet with a centerfold as issued. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition with overall tonal aging. Blank on the reverse with a centerfold as issued. There is some minor light damp staining on the top edge as seen, otherwise it is very clean with light antique aging that would frame up nicely. Pics are of the actual map. The front covers show some rub ware and scuffs. I noticed five tears on this map and one small pen point size hole. Two of the tears are each approx 2" l. One is on the fourth vertical fold/seam(going from left to right on the Greater Pittsburgh and Vicinity area side of the map) and the other one is on the seventh vertical fold/ seam, both are near the second horizontal fold. The three other tears are approx. 1/2" to 3/4" and are on the bottom edge of the map. This is a Rand McNally Map. When folded it is 4" x 9" and when unfolded it is 39 5/8" x 25 1/2" On one side is a Pittsburgh& Vicinity Area Map with a scale of 1" = 1.3 miles. Also on ... morethis side is a map key. The 40” by 32” foldout map has a street map on one side and a street index on the other side. It really isn’t in that bad condition for its age. The edges are a little rubbed, some small tears and a piece missing along the edges and there are a few splits where the map has been folded. Most of my items are estate finds so I have no way of knowing if they came from a smoke free or pet free home. Keep this in mind if you are overly sensitive. It is from a rare edition of Charles Desilver's New Universal Atlas. Published by Desliver in Philadelphia in 1857. The map has a copyright date by Desliver of 1856 in small print in the bottom margin. Desilver's name and address 251 Market St. Philladelphia appears under the title area. The American Cartographer, Charles Desilver, bought the copyrights and plates of Mitchell's atlas of the same name and updated the maps and made some minor changes particularly ... morein the title block, added his own border style, choices of color and published the atlas from 1856 to 1859. The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. A copy of the title page is included. Size: The map image measures approximately 13 1/4 by 15 3/4 inches on a 13 3/4 by 17" page. Condition: The map is in Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening around the edgesand some handling around the margins as seen in the pics.
