Lahontan's map covers from the Mississippi River eastward to the mouth of the St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean, and from the Hudson Bay to the conjunction of the Missouri River and the Mississippi. The map includes all five Great Lakes in full as well as the various regional river systems. Of the maps associated with Lahontan's narrative, this is considered to be the most factual and informative- his other important map, showing the course of the Longue River(here appearing at the western extreme of the map) is mostly fictional despite being enormously ... moreinfluential. This map is significant on many levels. Its excellent illustration of the regional river systems inspired Kershaw to comment on is usefulness in understanding the elaborate river networks that enabled the French fur trade. It also illustrates the placement of both American Indian villages and French forts throughout the region. This is an intriguing copper plate engraving of discoveries pertaining to the lower Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico including Cuba and the Bahamas. The focus is on French discoveries including La Salle's tragic exploration. The scene of La Salle's death at the hands of his own crew is depicted in the large elaborate cartouche. Many Indian villages are named and several early forts are shown, including one at New Orleans that is not yet named. The map is full of errors but reflects the basic knowledge the French had gained at the time. Nice dark impression on fine paper with full margins. Light age toning. Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of parts of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida- North America XIII) by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps.
