Each of these maps covers an area bounded by two lines of latitude and two lines of longitude spaced 7.5 minutes apart. The overall size of the map is approximately 22x27 inches. At least three of them prior to 1900. Only a couple of maps are dated in the1950s; a handful are from the 30's or 40's. These are maps that once belonged to the Geography Department of Boston University. According to the auctioneer, this was part of a huge hoard of material found in a Wellesley, Massachusetts, house. Please see the list below. Most of the maps are stamped"Property of Geography Department Boston University. A few are marked as belonging to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology library. At least a couple are embossed with"Appalachian Mountain Club Boston. Most have a pencilled"13J" in the corner. Scale is 1:62.500, so ... morean inch on the map is about a mile on the ground. The contour interval is 20 feet on some maps, 50 feet on others. All the tight contour lines on these maps makes it easy to understand why roads in West Virginia are so crooked. Size of the map sheets varies a little but is mostly 16 by 20 inches or a little larger. Condition is generally very good. There is a little soiling. Short edge tears, and minor chipping. Except for a couple of slightly oversized maps, there are no folds or creases. It appears that the maps have been stored flat for most of the past century. The reverse of many of the maps has a lengthy description of the ongoing effort by the US Geological Survey to create a topographical atlas of the United States. As well as a listing of about 60 symbols used on these maps to depict features relating to culture(manmade objects, political boundaries, etc) relief, water, or woods. One of the symbols I see on some maps shows"mine dumps. These maps would list individually for $10-$25. But my preference is to offer them as a single lot, substantially discounted. 1963 USGS Topographic map of Casino Lakes. Idaho, Custer County, N4407.5-W11445/7.5, Made from photographs taken in 1957, field checked in 1963. AMS 3072 III NE-Series V893. 22" x 27" size. I don't see any cities or towns anywhere on the map. It mainly consists of the Challis and Sawtooth National Forests. These are in almost the exact center of Idaho. The lowest altitude is around 6000' and goes up to Chase Lookout Mountain- 9954' but there may be points higher and lower. The map is in very good condition. With good color, no significant tears or rips, no marking or writing. The map has been in a roll since the 1960s with the bottom of the map exposed to the air. This exposed part is slightly darkened and dirty, as visible in the main photo. There are corner holes from pins and there is a fold along the bottom of the ... moretopographic part of the map. The map covers a 10,000 foot grid based on the Missouri coordinate system, uses National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929, and 1927 North American datum. Scale is 1:24,000. The content is contours and boundry type is quadrangle. Major areas and landmarks included on this map: Parkville Kansas City Missouri River Riss Lake Weatherby Lake I uncovered these maps from long term storage in a surveyors map cabinet. This map has wear from the field/office use it experienced throughout its life. The colors are still vibrant and all print is legible. I ask you to inspect the map to determine condition. 1904 USGS ATLAS THE GEOLOGY OF YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
Incredible 1904 USGS Atlas of the Yellowstone National Park by Arnold Hague. The atlas measures 19" X 22" This atlas includes 24 topographical and geological maps with great detail and color. Each sheet is approx. 18" X 22" and the maps are 15" X 18 3/4" Every notable landmark. Geyser, or waterhole is identified on at least one map. The legends are extensive and very colorful. Most of these remaining complete atlases are in private collections or museums or antique book stores and sell for $500 on up. Few individuals will ever own this atlas and it is worth consideration. The pages are made so they can be removed without damaging the sheet. Please ask questions before bidding.
