Description: This beautiful map of France was printed ... moreby the important American mapmaker T. G. Bradford in 1835. It depicts the Kingdom of France showing its various departments. And covers from the Nord in the north to eastern Pyrenees in the south and from Finistere in the west to Upper and Lower Rhine in the east. Towns, rivers, mountains and various other important topographical details are noted. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and departments are color coded. Until 1790 France was divided into 40 provinces based on local loyalties and feudal histories. On March 4th of 1790 the National Constituent Assembly reorganized the Provinces with what the Assembly deemed a more rational political structure. The new department system was intended to deliberately break up France's historical regions in an attempt to erase cultural differences and build a more homogeneous nation. Initially there were 83 departments but by 1800 that number increased to roughly 130. Many of the departments that were created in 1790 remain administrative districts to this day. This map was issued during the July Monarchy, a liberal constitutional monarchy under King Louis-Philippe instigated by the July Revolution of 1830. The July Monarchy would last until the Revolution of 1848 which saw the establishment of the Second Republic. The map was published in Thomas G. Bradford's 1835 Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical and Commercial. Bradford's atlas, published in 1835 was an important work on many levels. First, it was one of the first American atlases to follow an encyclopedic format, offering readers extensive geographical and statistical tables to supplement the maps themselves. Second, it was published in Boston and influenced the city's rise as a publishing center later in the 19th century(at the time most publishing in the United States was restricted to New York and Philadelphia) Third, this atlas was

Printed in the mid-19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Comparative length diagrams are at either side of the bottom below the spheres. In Good+ or better condition. Light uniform age wear, small light dampstain at bottom center edge, overall very presentable and attractive[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting antique map which will look nice when displayed. Sheet measures c. 12 1/4" W x 9 1/2" H. Printed area measures c. 10 1/4" W x 8 1/2" H. 31031] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. PIERRE MARIE FRANÇOIS DE(1748-1793) Pierre Marie François de Pagès, French naval officer, world traveler, and writer, was born of a noble family in Toulouse in 1748. Following the settlement of the Seven Years' War and the relaxed French-Spanish rivalry in North America, Pagès crossed Texas on the first lap of a journey around the world. Leaving his naval vessel at Santo Domingo on June 30, 1767, he sailed to New Orleans, traveled by the Mississippi and Red rivers to Natchitoches, then across Texas and into Mexico by way of the Old San Antonio Road.qv He returned to France by way of the Far East and then wrote an account of his adventure. The English translation of his book, Travels Round the World, in the Years 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771(1791) is perhaps the oldest description of Texas in an English-language book. Pagès later became a captain in the French navy, received the Croix de St. Louis, and became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences. He accompanied an expedition toward the South Pole in 1773-74 and one toward the North Pole in 1776. After fighting with the French navy in the American Revolution, he retired to a plantation in what is now Haiti, where he was killed in a slave uprising in 1793. The first voyage is described in vol. I; it took the author from France to New Orleans. Through the South, the Midwest and the West of North America, and on to Mexico, the Marianas, the Philippines, India and Persia. From there he went to Syria, Lebanon and the Holy Land and from Acre back to France. Volume II relates his voyage to the South Polar regions in 1773 and 1774, and his voyage towards the North Pole in 1776.
