Lovely antique Ordnance Survey map– Single sheet(not cut or folded) and mounted on cloth. Ideal for mounting in picture frame. This map has had the parish’s highlighted in pastel coloures so as to distinguish each of them from one and other. It appear that this map was produced in this way It states: Engraved at the Ordnance Survey Office. Southampton. Surveyed in 1876-84& Published by Colonel Sir C W Wilson KCB. FRS, RE, Director General 1888. Revised in 1898 and Published by Colonel J Farquharson C B RE. Director General 1900 The map itself is remarkably clean and in fabulous and excellent condition for a map of this age there is very little wear and discolouration. Printed more than 156 years ago. This map is drawn on a scale of 18 miles to one inch and shows the progress of the public surveys as these lands were opening up to settlement. The image area measures 17-1/2" x 21-1/4" And the map locates forts, towns, Indian treaty lines, reservations, and natural features. The map was compiled under the direction of Warner Lewis. Surveyor General, in Dubuque, Iowa, and is dated October 21, 1855. It was lithographed by A. Hoen& Company, Baltimore, and published in a report to the 1st Session 34th Congress, Washington, D.C. 1856. The map labels Indian lands and reservations. Including the Oneida reservation, south of ... moreGreen Bay, the Winnebago reservation, south of Mankato, and the Brothertown and Stockbridge reserves on Lake Winnebago. It locates the Menominee reservation, as well as the Menominee cession of 1848, in which a large area of land was opened up to settlement. And it also labels"Chipeway Lands, north of the 1837 treaty line. Other named places and features include Fort Snelling. At the junction of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, Fort Gaines, Prairie du Chien, Mankato, Brownsville, Green Bay, Winona, Red Wing, Henderson, Traverse des Sioux, Farribeault's, the Kickapoo River, and more. Who had served in the Black Hawk War and been elected to the Iowa State Legislature, was appointed Register of the United States Land Office under the administration of James K. The Hag ue between 1747& 1780. Charles-Marie La Condamine(1701- 1774) was a French mathematician and surveyor who took part in an expedition to South America to measure a degree of latitude. La Condamine was born in Paris. He was trained for the military profession. But turned his attention to science and geographical exploration. After taking part in a scientific expedition in the Levant(1731) he became a member with Louis Godin and Pierre Bouguer of the expedition sent to Peru in 1735 to determine the length of a degree of the meridian in the neighborhood of the equator. His associations with his principals were unhappy; the expedition was beset by many difficulties. And finally La Condamine separated from the rest and made his way from Quito down the Amazon, ultimately reaching Cayenne. His was the first scientific exploration of the Amazon. While the competing Stieler atlas was still utilising copperplates for their atlas maps. Kiepert switched to chromolithography and noted in a commentary that his draughtsmen and lithographers"delivered work whose elegance and sharpness of line exceed many copper-engraved works" an assessment supported by this elegant map. The topography is from aerial photographs by photogrammetric methods taken between 1943 and 1955. The map has been stored rolled up, there are bend marks to the paper, but no hard folds. The document is signed by a J A Sowers(S F C) and I am not sure if the S F C stands for Surveyor of Floyd County or maybe Sheriff. The document pertains to 33 1/2 acrs of property belonging to Moses Martin. The property ajoins property owned by William M Vest. G L Lawrence, J T Martin and also is adjacent to a school house lot. The property has two streams on it and they are Piney Fork and Beaver Dam Creek(I believe Piney Fork feeds into Beaver Dam Creek) Like all land surveys of the day, many references to trees and other objects as reference point. It includes Great Island, the Navy Year, Kittery Maine, and countless smaller islands. This 1866 map represents the culmination of the Coast Survey's work in the vicinity of Portsmouth. Unlike earlier issues, this example presents rich topographical detail as well as hydrographical data. There are countless depth soundings throughout and the right-hand quadrants feature sailing instructions, notes ... moreon tides and light houses, and a wealth of other practical information for the mariner. The city of Portsmouth itself is beautifully illustrated with numerous individual buildings and all major streets rendered. The triangulation for this map is the work of T. J. Cram. The Topography was completed by H. Stansbury. The hydrography was accomplished by parties under the command of M. Woodhull. Stansbury, it should be noted, had previously completed the first accurate survey of Great Salt Lake in anticipation of a transcontinental railroad and is one of the most important cartographers in American history. Though this chart is a minor production compared to his other pieces, his association with it bears note. This chart was published three years after Stansbury's death, so we can assume that it must have been one of his final projects for the Army Corps of Engineers. The whole was compiled under the supervision of A. D. Bache, one of the most influential American cartographers of the 19th century. Size: Printed area measures 19.5 inches high by 27 inches wide.
