Please see description of grading condition on chart below. See the pi cture for additional information. Description Grade Absolutely crisp: no soil. Wear, or creases. Station stamp is acceptable, as are small wrinkles introduced in printing. Age toning acceptable only if even. MINT As above. But minor edge wear seen. Light pencil marking okay. Age toning may be uneven. NEAR MINT As above. Professional routing marks or a minor annotation okay. Creases show usage. But map has not been misfolded. EXCELLENT As above. But wear is evident. Corners of inner creases may be beginning to separate, but less than 1 cm. May be rippled from water damage/high humidity ... morebut may not be foxed. Any dogear creases are not torn. There may be single tack holes. Map may have been misfolded. VERY GOOD As above. But separations extend less than half a panel span. If tears are not on a crease, each is less than 1 cm. Writing may be significant but does not damage front cover design. Map may be brittle but can be still opened flat without damage. Soil or scuffs can be present, but food or oil is absent. Fading is extensive. Minor foxing can be present, or minor insect damage i.e. silverfish skinning" not affecting information. GOOD As above. But problems are cumulative. Insect damage affects either the map or cover graphics. Extensive calculations, separations short of panel loss, or extensive foxing present. Map is still usable for navigation. FAIR As above. This old map was part of a 1914 atlas. It is in very good condition for being 100 years old. Most of the maps from this Atlas show a much older copyright date. This one shows 1914. Page measures 10.25 by 15 inches or 26 by 38.2 cm with actual map a little smaller. The map looks much better than my picture. It shows Streets. Cemeteries, parks and other points of interest in plain and easy to read text. Your map will be shipped flat in a large cardboard enforced envelope enclosed in a plastic sleeve for its protection and safe delivery. You get the original 100 year old map. Not a modern copy.

This auction features a very nice double-page. Highly-detailed, multi-color map of California, plus two maps on the back: a full-page map of San Francisco and a full-page map of Nevada. The maps were rescued from Gaskell's Atlas of the World, published in 1888, which was in unsalvageable condition. The last two photos validate the origin of the map and its publishing date. The California map illustrates all towns. Cities, counties, and major roads that existed in 1888, rivers and lakes, plus topographical features such as Death Valley, mountain ranges, and off-shore islands. The San Francisco map shows all the streets that existed in 1888, plus 36 different prominent buildings, including hotels, churches, and theatres. Additionally, steam railroads, horse-drawn railroads, and ferries are also identified. The Nevada map is quite striking ... moreand colorful, with major towns and topographical features such as mountains, deserts, and valleys clearing identified. The California map has a total page size of 13-1/4" wide x 21-1/4" long. And an image size of 12" wide x 18-1/2" long. Both the San Francisco and Nevada maps have an image size of approximately 9-1/2" x 11-1/2" The condition of all of the maps is excellent, with no holes or tears in the image, and a few very small tears in the white margin. There is also some light soiling in the margin. The paper condition is good with minimal yellowing. See photos for details of the maps. In addition, there is an inset showing the larger regional vicinity surrounding the city. The map was produced through copper-plate engraving with colors added in successive print runs, making it relatively unusual and costly for the time.
