Artists and Engravers: Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics. Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" the first modern"Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term"Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the"Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately. Augustus Mitchell click image to enlarge This beautifully hand coloured original antique map was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the 1870 edition of his large New General Atlas- dated at the foot of the map. These county. State, city& country maps are some of the most ornate and beautifully coloured maps published in the US in the 19th century. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and their successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his successors and son were one of the most prominent publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. I'm honestly not sure whether this is a ladies pocket watch or a large men's wristwatch movement. I thought it was a ladies pocket watch. And I'm having second thoughts as I'm writing this. If I'm wrong hopefully someone will tell me! It's a really nice Longines movement. With a back that is marked base metal on the back, and 10k RGP bezel on the inside. I don't see any flaws with the dial, no cracks or blemishes. The movement serial number is#3491931, and looks nice but is not currently running. I recently was lucky enough to purchase many boxes from an old jewelry store in western Mass full of watch parts and jewelers scrap. There was a nice grouping of very old watches. The other side has a spring loaded snap on mechanism which attaches to the watch case, Both attachments swivel 360 degrees so they won’t bind up. The watch is a very durable watch with a dark blue face and a Red and blue bezel with silver numbers. The bezel screws off ... moreso you can turn the watch upside down so you can view it looking straight on like a pendant or draw it up and look down on it. Either way that you are comfortable with you are in control of how the face is turned. Pretty nifty I think. This is a well worn piece and has a deep scratch on the crystal. This is a beautiful Limited Edition Commemorative quartz pocket watch. I do not know much about it. Other than what you see. It was a gift to me back in 1986. It is a nice heavy weight, fantastic detail pocket watch. It had worked when I first received it as a gift, but no longer works, I guess the battery ran out. We are having to move, and living on a fixed income with the economy in such bad times, I have no choice but to sell items I usually wouldn't. But, at least maybe someone who gets this watch can enjoy it for years to come, just take it to a jewelry shop and get a new battery put in it, and it should work just fine. I can't guarentee it, but that's the only thing I can think of why it would stop running, since it was never taken out of the house or used. The Watch is the color of Gold. It could be Gold plated or just ... morea Gold Chrome like finish, but it sure looks like Gold! It even comes with a beautiful Gold chain, that is a good looking chain, it has very tight links, makes it look like a snake, so it won't snag on any clothing. The clip on the chain is also Gold colored. The front cover of the pocket watch has the Stature Of Liberty, with clouds and a sail boat, sailing by in the water. There is such great detail, you can even see the ripples in the water. The design is a raised design to give it that 3-D effect. The back cover has the American Bald Eagle flying with mountains and clouds in the background, and way below the Eagle you can see little tiny trees, also done with all the art work raised for that 3-D effect. The inside of the front cover is smooth with little circles, lightly done all on the inside with the serial number. The back cover of course has the watch itself in it. The face of the watch has roman numerals, there is the flame, in the center of the face, that our Lady of the Statue Of Liberty Holds. with the dates on each side of the flame, 1886 on the left side and 1986 on the right. 19th Century Beadwork Whimsy Wall Pocket, Red Wool & White "Pearl" Beads
This 19th century whimsy. Measuring 9 1/8” by 3 ¼” by almost 2 ¾” is constructed of thin red wool on white cardstock& originally was covered on both sides with red wool, but the back is entirely lost now. There are penciled numbers seen here on both sides which suggest a mystery of sorts. Today this is how it might be done& not in China either. Back then, this wall pocket itself suggests“mass production” by many members of their tribe of all ages& both sexes would have speeded up production considerably, but to what purpose? One person could have cut out the parts of stiff paper& cloth patterns while others might have stitched them together; others could have stitched around the edges, while yet still others could have been beading the vines on the top, even as others were beading those on the bottom; still other ... morewomen or men even could cut out the shapes of cardstock where the elaborate leaves& blossoms could be beaded upon; highly skilled people beaded the leaves& blossoms upon the cardstock shapes which were finally simply sewn upon the now finished wall pocket. Even children could help. The problem, however, then even as today, would be“quality control” how do you make people care about their work. In reality, however, I know this whimsy was really made by one person back then& that’s why this work was exquisite as it was made, 1 stitch at a time. Added a pocket watch chain key on the bracelet. This brass chain is not a smooth as other types so expect a catch if you wear it with a fine material. The face has hairlines to the porcelain, and has a fine delicate hour, minute and second hand. 5. The outside of the cover over the works is marked what I believe is Ami Jacot, Locle Chronometer. It has 4 gemstone backs that screw on and off so you can change it with whatever you wear. The extra backs are blue lapis. Tigers eye,black onyx and mother of pearl.
