Rare 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition World's Fair Expo souvenir fan
click picture to enlarge click picture to enlarge A very rare souvenir from the 1876 Philadelphia International Exhibition! A paper fan with the image of the Main Building from the Fair with some names and addresses along the top edge. The fan opens to about 20 inches across. Closed. It is 11 inches long. As you can imagine. The fan is a bit fragile. There are a few spots of paper loss and some small fold tears along folds here and there. It was probably bordered on each edge by two black plastic strips, but there is only one strip remaining along the right side. There are a couple of small age spots and a strip of paper hanging off the left side. See all in photos. However, as you can see in the photos, it is in much better shape than one might expect for what was probably a much used souvenir as one traveled the fair. It seems very rare ... moreto have survived 137 years! As is and exactly as we found it. 1876 PHILADELPHIA CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION: WOMEN’S PAVILION VIEW CARD
Striking tri-color view of the“ WOMEN’S PAVILION” at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition) Printed in soft yellow. Purple and blue on card about 5-1/2 x 3-3/8 inches; no publisher given. Blank back. A simple caption beneath the image states that the building was 160 feet in both length and width. It is said that when women as a class were denied permission to exhibit in the Main Building of the Centennial Expo, Elizabeth Duane Gillespie(a descendant of Benjamin Franklin) led a group of Philadelphia women in raising $30.000 to construct this building, the first such structure ever built for a world’s fair– predating the famous Women’s Building of the World’s Columbian Exposition by some 17 years. Controversial in its day. The Pavilion showed only female handiwork, from needle arts and corsets to household goods and inventions by women, ... moreand was also the site for printing The New Century for Women newspaper. By the way.the Centennial Exposition’s“Women’s Day” was held on November 7. 1876, national election day- apparently fair officials thought that men, being absent to exercise the franchise, wouldn’t miss much! Very slight edge/corner wear; basically very fine for its age. Condition as scan shows. PLEASE ASK ALL QUESTIONS PRIOR TO BIDDING TO ENSURE YOUR SATISFACTION. SHIPPING WILL BE $1.50 FIRST CLASS MAIL.
