MAPS COLLECTION PENNSYLVANIA VINTAGE PANORAMIC MAP COLLECTION 207 MAPS IN JPEG FORMAT ON 1 DVD-ROM The panoramic map was a popular cartographic form used ... moreto depict U.S. and Canadian cities and towns during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Known also as bird's-eye views. Perspective maps, and aero views, panoramic maps are non photographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. Although not generally drawn to scale, they show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective. Victorian America's panoramic maps differ dramatically from the Renaissance city perspectives. The post-Civil War town views are more accurate and are drawn from a higher oblique angle. Small towns as well as major urban centers were portrayed. Panoramic mapping of urban centers was unique to North America in this era. Most panoramic maps were published independently. Not as plates in an atlas or in a descriptive geographical book. Preparation and sale of nineteenth-century panoramas were motivated by civic pride and the desire of the city fathers to encourage commercial growth. Many views were prepared for and endorsed by chambers of commerce and other civic organizations and were used as advertisements of a city's commercial and residential potential. HERE ARE INCLUDED HIGH DETAILED MAPS. SAMPLE BELOW HAS BEEN REDUCED IN SIZE SO THAT THE PAGE COULD LOAD IN A REASONABLE TIME. YOU WILL RECEIVE HIGH QUALITY JPEGS THAT ARE IN THE THOUSANDS OF PIXEL SIZES IN WIDTH AND HEIGHT AND AT 300 DPI. YOU CAN ZOOM IN AND FIND FINE DETAIL OF STREETS. HOUSES AND MORE. Like most of Colton's state maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. The map covers the entire state of Pennsylvania as well adjacent parts of New York, Maryland, and New Jersey This map was issued at the height of the American westward expansion. Six years before this map was drawn the California gold discovery of 1849 enticed thousands to embark upon the rigorous transcontinental emigration. Meanwhile, with the rise in territorial population to the west of the Mississippi, the eastern states were becoming increasingly divided over the issues of slavery and state vs. federal ... moresovereignty. Within five years these disputes would lead to the American Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg, considered a major turning point of the Civil War, was fought in southern Pennsylvania in 1863. On another note, shortly after this map was this map was drawn, in 1859, oil was discovered in western Pennsylvania, leading to America's first oil boom and feuling the fortunes of John Rockefeller and others. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define state and territorial boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City. Issued as page no. 20 in volume 1 of Colton's 1856 Atlas of the World. 1848 Morris and Melish Wall Map of Pennsylvania
1848 Morris and Melish Wall Map of Pennsylvania WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Map Of Pennsylvania. Constructed from the County Surveys authorized by the State; and other original Documents. Description: An extremely fine 1848 first edition example of William ellis Morris' map of Pennsylvania. This 1848 map is essentially a full update and revision of John Melish's seminal 1822 map of the same region. Morris essentially followed the model laid down by Melish. Covering Pennsylvania and the adjacent states from Lake erie to the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays, and from Ohio to the Atlantic, New York City and the Hudson River, with New Jersey and Delaware rendered in full. The title and the cartouche, bearing Pennsylvania's state armorial crest, is also derived directly from Melish's map. Recognizing ... morethe need for an accurate, highly detailed, large format map of the state for administrative use, the Pennsylvania General Assembly issued an 1816 commission the well-regarded cartographer John Melish. Melish was well known for his extraordinary attend to detail and meticulous work and by, 1816, had already produced a number of impressive and significant maps. This work however, Melish intended to be his masterpiece and the model for all future state maps. The project involved legislation that required each county to commission a standardized map from which Melich would compile the whole. The project took six year with the completed map finally published in 1822. Subsequent revised editions followed in 1824, 1826, and 1832. Pennsylvania underwent a period of explosive growth in the 1830s and 1840s as the exploitation of the state's vast coal reserves fostered industry and emigration. The relatively primitive county structures described by Melish had evolved into highly developed administrative regions with numerous new counties, municipalities, and towns. A new map was called for. The General Assembly engaged the railroad executive and civil engineer William ellis Morris to&

1832 Marshall Map of New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania
1832 Marshall Map of New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Map of the Country from Raritan River in East Jersey to Elk Head in Maryland Shewing the several Operations of the American and British Arimies in 1776& 1777. Description: This is a rare map of central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania during the American Revolutionary War issued for John Marshall’s 1832 edition of the Life of Washington. The map covers the lands on both sides of the Delaware River from Alexandria. Sandy Hook, and Staten Island south pas Philadelphia and Trenton to Delaware and Maryland. Various rivers, major roads, and the sites of important battles are noted. Color coding illustrates the positions of the British(red) and American(blue) as each side battled to maintain control of major cities and river ... moresupply routes. Marshall prepared this map to illustrate the important Middle Atlantic theater of the American Revolutionary War. Specifically this map documents the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Trenton, Paoli, Princeton and Monmouth. Though both sides claimed significant victories, the greater strain fell on the British, who though successful in the capture of Philadelphia, suffered losses enough that the position became untenable. The ultimate source for this map was the work of John Hills who accompanied the British army as a cartographer and after hostilities moved to Philadelphia. This map appeared in atlas volume attached to the 1832 edition of John Marshall’s seminal work, The Life of Washington. Marshall composed the five volume biography between 1805 and 1807 and based the work on original papers and records provided by the president’s own family. The earliest partial edition of the The Life of Washington appeared in 1824 as A History of the American Colonies. In 1832 Marshall revised and abridged the original voluminous work to just two volumes and some 400 pages– from which this map was extracted. The maps of the 1832 edition are notable and desirable in

1811 Reading Howell Map of Pennsylvania
1811 Reading Howell Map of Pennsylvania WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: A Map of the State of Pennsylvania by Reading Howell MDCCCXI. Description: This map. Which was first issued by Reading Howell in 1791, is considered to be one of the most important maps of Pennsylvania ever issued as well as the finest of the 18th century. Howell, a landowner and surveyor of Pennsylvania, was commissioned by the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1789 to create a map of the state compiling all of the new information generated by military surveyors on both sides of the conflict during the American Revolutionary War. Howell used this data, as well as his own survey work near the headwaters of the Susquehanna, Lehigh, and Schuylkill Rivers to produce this highly influential map. Howell’s mapping of Pennsylvania marks a significant advance ... moreover all previous cartographic work in the state. This is the first map to show the full extent of Pennsylvania, including the state’s western border and the all-important sliver of land connecting it to Lake erie. It is also the first map to clearly delineate the Pennsylvania’s county structure, forming a basis for civil administration within the state to this day. Many of Pennsylvania’s towns, cities, creeks, rivers, mountains, roads, and mineral deposits appeared for the first time on this amp. Howell’s contract with the Pennsylvania Assembly, for which he was advanced 200 pounds, demanded that he produce the new map in 2 years. The earliest known examples of Howell’s map date to 1792, however, there are state records suggesting that a copyright was issued and possibly a delivery was made in 1791. It was later republished in several subsequent editions, the most famous being two important 1811 issues, the current example being one. Both 1811 editions were engraved by John Vallance. This edition of the map corresponds to the third state, published by Kimber& Conrad and Johnson& Warner, in which the original has been reduced and updated with decorative cartouche
1731 Silfverling Map of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey
1731 Silfverling Map of Pennsylvania. Maryland, and New Jersey WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Delineatio Pennsilvaniae et Caesareae. Nov. occident seu West N. Iersey in America Description: This is an extremely rare whimsical 1731 map focusing on the remnants of the ephemeral colony of New Sweden by Jonas Silferling and Tobias Biorck. New Sweden. Which by 1731 had been assimilated into British New York, occupied parts of Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland between the Chesapeake Bay and New York. The present map centers on the Delaware River and Philadelphia, but extends northward as far as Albany and sough as far as Virginia, taking in portions of eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New York. As intended, it illustrates numerous early Swedish settlements, including Fort Christina(Wilmington, Delaware) on both sides ... moreof the Delaware River as well as various American Indian settlements and the english colonial cities of Philadelphia, Burlington, New York, and Albany. Curiously, much of the map is in english rather than Swedish, an indication of British social and political dominance in the region and a suggestion that Tobias Biorck, though a first generation son of Swedish immigrants, thought and lived primarily in english. The cartouche, which is surmounted by the British royal armorial crest, is also suggestive of the 1655 assimilation of New Sweden into British America. Other decorative elements include beautifully engraved sailing ships, a sea monster, stylized American Indians, and various flora and fauna(most Turkeys) indigenous to the region. The map’s is also particular charming because of some of its cruder features which include rough engraving, the idiosyncratic lettering, florid calligraphy, and the proliferation of mis-spellings such as'Buks' County, Baltemore' and'Khesapeak Bay' It is noteworthy that the present example is exceptional and superior in condition to most other known examples held in institutional collections. Unlike some examples of this map,
