The map shows all of the state's counties; county seat towns; major cities and many small towns& villages; rivers& streams; and topographic detail. Most of the state's railroads and all of the Major railroads are shown in red. The map is printed on medium weight paper. Purchased in 1999 from Dumont Maps in Santa Fe. NM, here is the original description that came with the map: Map of Oregon and Upper California from Surveys of John Charles Fremont and other Authorities- Preuss 1850. 19.5"x16.5" This is the smaller version of Fremont's remendously influential map of the area from Great Salt Lake to San Diego. It is apparently printed from a portion of the plate used for the larger map. And was probably issued to meet the demand for maps following the discovery of gold in California. The name notwithstanding, Oregon is not shown, but the map does show all of the Great Basin and routes to the diggings. There is much good information on the west as it was known, but one glaring error places a range of mountainseast-west across the Great Basin. These nonexistent mountains appeared on commercial ... moremaps for years afterward. Folded as issued, else clean and bright. Scarce transitional map depicting Washington state in a pre-statehood configuration with it's border extending across to the Rocky Mountains. A large portion of eastern Oregon boldly labelled"Unexplored" Emigrants route from the states shown as well as a"Emigrants Waggon Road to California" The first state. Of the first printed appearance, for all the many revised Mitchell issues which will follow. Lovely map from Mitchell's"New General Atlas" Which early in 1860 replaced the"New Universal Atlas" The contents were completely revised for the 1860 atlas, all the maps newly conceived and printed. Engraved. Lithographed, bold and detailed full original hand color. A pleasing ... moreexample of mid-19th century Mitchell cartographic printing. Blending the highest levels of American engraving with large-scale commercial lithography and high volume detailed hand-coloring. The 1860 first edition went through at least 2 variant printings in the first year alone. And the maps were continually revised over the following 33 years, often several times annually. Individual maps from the somewhat rare 1860 first issue are quite a bit scarcer than virtually all other Mitchell atlas maps. These early first issue maps have a striking visual appearance which is noticably different from all which follow. As noted by Rumsey. The maps from this 1860 first issue can be distinguished by the lack of a page number outside the engraved border area. More significantly[and not noted by Rumsey] the decorative borders for this 1860 issue are unique, dark and richly printed, with a three-dimensional, almost mezzotint feel, which disappears on most maps after this first issue. The second issue of the 1860 atlas has different borders, less richly printed than these. Indeed, a comparison of this ornately and beautifully engraved border[which are only found on this 1860 first issue]
