This Civil War-era chart is an important historical depiction of the entrance to the S-shaped inlet where the Coos River enters the Pacific Ocean in southwestern Oregon. Today the port of Coos Bay is the largest and deepest port between San Francisco. California and the Columbia River. Condition: Like many government fold-out maps of the mid-19th century. It is printed on a lightweight paper which has toned somewhat along the folds. There are a couple of faint spots and no marks. Rips, or tears. Major railroads are shown and it is interesting to see where they run-and where they don't! The map is printed on medium weight paper. Blank on the reverse with the exception of area and population figures(by county) from the 11th US Census of 1890. Total population of Oregon was 313.767; and of Washington- 349.390. King County[Seattle] had 63,989! This printing is NOT part of the encyclopedia text. But was printed by the lithographer when the map itself was prepared.
