This map opens up to a generous 29" x 19-3/4" and is drawn on a scale of one inch to one mile. It was lithographed by Julius Bien& Co. The map has a copyright date by Desliver of 1856 in small print in the bottom margin. Desilver's name and address 251 Market St. Philladelphia appears under the title area. The American Cartographer, Charles Desilver, bought the copyrights and plates of Mitchell's atlas of the same name and updated the maps and made some ... moreminor changes particularly in the title block, added his own border style, choices of color and published the atlas from 1856 to 1859. The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. A copy of the title page is included. Overall, a nicely preserved map with nice color that show early territorial borders including Minnesota, Nebraska, Washington, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico, a long Kansas, Oklahoma as Indian Territory and insets of the California Gold Region and Washington DC. Size: The map image measures approximately 16 by 26 1/4 inches on a 17 1/2 by 27" page. Condition: The map is in Good to Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring and centerfold as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. This is a really detailed vintage marked sterling silver Oregon State Map. It weighs 2.2 grams and features Portland. Salem and Medford plus detailed fish and damn. Great for any charm bracelet, as an unusual pendant or a nice gift for anyone with ties to Oregon. Free shipping in the USA For buyers that do not sale is this note FYI. Every item we put up costs the very least. Depending on the starting price, is as low as 30 cents and up. If the item doesnt sell and we put it back up it is another 30 cents, and if you keep putting it up and it doesnt sell, it gets quite expensive. Condition: It is in Very Good condition for its age. Printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a few minor smudges around the margin, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that would frame up well. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. Eugene, Portland, and Salem area maps on the other. I traveled the county extensively during the early 1970s and picked up maps like this one from the local gas stations. They were free then. Shortly after the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo. These maps started being offered for a charge, usually a dollar or so but, by then the driving public had grown accustomed to getting them free so, their distribution dropped off dramatically. Maps like this one marked the end of a motoring related era. The dating of this map is based on its using 1940s census material-and on it saying on the cover that'all points of military interest have been removed voluntarily from this map and index. Also. The importance of paper to"the war effort" is printed along the map's edge. Pu all of that together and I feel it is safe to say dates it as a World War 2 era publication. This is a SHELL OIL ROAD MAP OF OREGON It was found pasted in an old scrap book-and the back cover still has paper from the scrap book attached. see photos) The good news is that it was well preserved in the scrap book. Beautiful vintage 1947 World Book Encyclopedia map Oregon colorful work of art!
This is a map of Oregon from the limited printing of the 1947 post-war edition of the World Book Encyclopedia. It Is really a pretty map; the colors are bright. The printing is crisp, and it is in great condition. This map is a 2-page spread disbound from the encyclopedia. It was tipped in using a separate little tongue of paper, so the map itself was not cut as it was removed. There is a crease down the center where it was folded in the book. The map was a little too big to fit on my scanner, so not all of it is shown in the scan. It has a white border all the way around it. The map is 9 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches. The altitude is color-coded, from green for the lowest altitude through yellow and orange to red for the highest altitude. I don't know much about maps, so I don't know how this one was made. It has an old-fashioned lithographed ... morelook to it, but I think I can see dots when I look at it through a magnifying glass. On the back of the map Oregon towns are listed with their location and population(circa 1947) This is such a nice-looking map! It would look great framed.
