This inlet, located on North Carolina's Outer Banks, provides access to the Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean. Apparently a hurricane in 1846 separated the islands. A ship name the Oregon rode out the storm on Pamlico Sound and was the first to report the new inlet, thus immortalizing itself in the region's geography. When this map was made, the southern island, today's Pea Island, was as yet unnamed and so both islands are here identified as'Bodie Island' Studying this pass on Google Earth will reveal ... morea remarkable change in the regional topography as over 100 years of storm has moved the inlet southwards over 2 miles since its original formation. Vintage 1965 "Sportsman's Map Oregon" Pictorial Tourism Blitz-Weinhard Brewery
Here is a very nice map published in 1965 by the Blitz-Weinhard Brewery. Portland, Oregon called the" Sportsman's Map of Oregon" Apparently it was distributed not only to advertise Blitz-Weinhard products. But also to promote tourism within Oregon. As stated in the legend found in the lower right corner of the map(see Photo 2) I would call this a pictorial-tourism-advertising map. It has very little writing on it. But is profusely illustrated with drawings of the animals found in Oregon along with a few related vignettes. The map is in very good to excellent condition with no tears. Folding, spots, or blemishes, except that at the very top right corner, within the outer border, there is a dog-eared rip of about 1/2" see Photo 5) Other than that. There is only modest wrinkling along the edges due to the map being unrolled. ... moreThe publishing information is very tiny in the lower right hand corner and the date"1965" as the publish date could actually read" 1955" the printing is slightly smeared. The size of the map is 30" x 21" It is printed on heavy stock paper and it appears to have an almost plastic-like film on the paper that brings a semi-gloss finish to the map. This was probably done to extend the life of the paper. But it also adds to the coloration and brightness of the map and makes it more attractive. On the reverse are line drawings of the animals depicted on the paper indexed to descriptions and details about the various species. A very sharp-looking map with a definite 1950's-1960's flavor to it. The colors are bright and true. It is quite framable. No international bidders- except Canada- please.
