Antique Geographia World Maps Alexander Gross pre 1922 LARGE COLLECTION
I am offering for sale my own LARGE collection of approx. 125 Alexander Gross Geographia World Maps I believe these all to be of a single publication date of between 1918 and 1922. With earlier Geographia maps having no publication or Cumberland date code I cannot be totally sure of the exact date. However the subject of some of the maps fully support this date. For Instance the maps of the German Colony Repossessions, and Ireland before Partition. These maps were produced centre folded to be edge mounted. But these have always been loose so have not suffered any perforation. There is as expected some edge discolouration and moisture marking on the paper consistent with their age. But this has not affected the quality of the printed image. In fact for 90 plus years old, they are remarkable, with none of the damage to the fold you would normally ... moresee, and no sunlight fading. I initially intend to sell these as one lot. As to find a collection of this size is now very uncommon, and it would be a shame to split. Individual sheets if you look worldwide. Are achieving very good prices of between £15- £40, as they make ideal candidates for framing. 1768 Anders Åkerman-Fredrik Akrel World Atlas 30 Maps Pre-Cook Cartography RARE!
Atlas Juvenilis eller Geographiska Chartor Oblong Quarto. 30 copperplate engraved maps, 20 cm x 16 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Johann Edmann. Uppsala, 1768, 2 added maps 1789& 1796) We are pleased to offer this example of a world atlas by Swedish engraver and cartographer Anders Åkerman(1723-1778) featuring 30 finely engraved miniature maps. Åkerman was based in Uppsala. And is known as the"Father of Swedish Globemaking" for his production of terrestrial and celestial globes although he also produced atlases and nautical charts. Examples of his are found in the Royal Academy of Science in Stockholm. And an impressive armillary sphere made by Åkerman can be viewed from an Italian museum collection in Milan. Interestingly. The atlas has two maps that have been inserted to replace Åkerman's original ... moreplates- a map of France by the eccentric Uppsala geographer Daniel Djurberg(1744-1834) dated 1796 and the map of Sweden dated 1789 by Åkerman's partner in map and globe production Fredrik Akrel(1748-1804) Akrel took over the business after Åkerman's death in 1778 and is believed to have reissued this 1768 atlas with these two"updated" maps around 1798 in hopes of getting some more mileage off the then 30-year-old plates. The atlas has in the front endpapers the signature of Jonas Frisk(1787-1849) and the date of 21 August 1799 when he would have been 12 years old- Frisk went on to build a very successful business in Stockholm as a furniture dealer and mirror manufacturer. It also bears the signature of another Jonas Frisk and the date 1873. Presumably a grandson, as well as a"Rusti Rasti" Strength in Justice) bookplate with an undecipherable signature. The back endpapers have a meticulously recorded manuscript list of world city populations from Nanking at#1 with 1,500,000 to Königsberg at#49 with 70,000 residents. VINTAGE SCHOOL HOUSE WALL MAP CASE w/5 MAPS I've had this map case on my wall for over 15 years. And am ready for a change. Bought in Phoenix. AZ from an antique dealer who told me he got it out of a little school house in Minnesota. He was going to make the case into a spice rack. When opened the case. Plus the door, hangs down 3' The case is 3 3/4" deep. There are ... more2(original? eye bolts at the top of the case. I use 2 lag bolts(through these eye bolts) into the studs in my wall to hang. See photos. It is quite the eye catcher& conversation maker! I also use the top of the case as a shelf for other items. This case can hold 8 maps total. There are 5 vintage. Used maps that are included. Each map has a peg that fits into a hole on the left side of the inside of the case. On the right side are original metal pieces that hold the map in place. There is a metal long piece that slides out. You can then roll the map& place the right side map peg into this metal piece. Then slide the metal piece into the wood slot. There are metal'circles' that rotate over the long piece to keep them from sliding out. There should be 8 long metal pieces. But I only have 7. Please see the photos. I think these maps could be pulled down& then let roll up on their own as a shade would. But I don't do that. I always unroll& roll the maps up by hand. Map measures about 30" by 40" when unfolded. Can't find a date of production- only the"Copyright L-442" seen in photo( From some internet research. I'm guessing this was produced in the 1930s or 40s. Reversible as seen. Some tenuous spots along the creases with some separation- hopefully photos can speak to where creases are tenuous. The cover is not as blue as main photo- product of flash photograph, but other photos have true color.

These classroom pull down type maps are in wonderful shape. First map is made by Cram. It is of the united states aprox. size is 5 ft. tall x 6 ft. wide. Second map is of Europe. aprox. size is 3.1/2 ft. x 5 ft. tall. Third map is of Africa and is also 3.1/2 x 5ft. tall. Fourth map is of the world this map has a small clean tear at the top( not on the map part) about 2.5 in. long. It is aprox. 29 in. tall x 44 in. wide. They would look great in a study. Library, your childs room or in a retro style room. Looking at these just gives you a good feeling and memories of your school years come flooding in. A total of 227 geologic folios were produced by the United States Geological Survey between 1894 and 1945. We will be offering over 100 of them on eBay. Each folio includes both topographic and geologic maps for each quadrangle represented in that folio. And normally a description of the basic and economic geology of the same area. Some folios are not beautiful from the outside, but all are very functional, and the price is right. Number/Name of Folio- No. 154 Winslow State- AR. Indian Territory- Crawford, Washington, Franklin Counties Issue Date- 1907 Contents include Pages of Text- 6 Topographic Map- 1. 30-minute size Areal Geology Map- 1 Area Features/Towns- White River. West Fork, Frisco, Mountainburg, Sulphur City, Lincoln Condition(also note special conditions below) Contents in fairly nice condition. They are 18.5x21.75" size, and may contain somewhere between 10 to 30 or so pages(major maps/tables are full page) Most cover a single USGS Quadrangle(typically 15 or 30-minute size) However, some cover between 2 and 5 quadrangles in a single folio. Several are Special Districts, covering a specific area rather than a complete quadrangle. Folio's will be sent rolled. T he copy of Maps from which these come was owned by President Milard Filmore while he was in office. The book. And others from Filnmore's library, came from my grandfather's estate. My grandfather lived in Cuba, New York(south of Buffalo where Filmore lived) from before 1913 until the mid 1940's. I will enclose a copy of the title page(last photo) with the maps. Description: An uncommon atlas which was published in the 1850s. While the date of his edition is uncertain. It preceded the 1858 which had different engravers. No publisher is listed but Philips(Atlases 828.29) says it was published in Genoa. Of note, some of the maps in this atlas were stamped“M. Dini, Genova” these maps are in this group. Two quite unusual configuration of Russian Siberia and the immediately adjoining areas. Divided by Provinces and with excellent–though not always accurate-topographic ... moredetail. The western portion highlights a caravan route from“Tobolsk” to the eastern city of Irkutsk on Lake Baikal. The eastern portion shows the Lena River and the Kamchatka Peninsula and even a tiny portion of North America. In the“Oceano Glaciale Artico” are a group of islands labeled“Nouva Siberia” Of interest.
