1888 Genuine Antique Color Map of New York City (northern), from Gaskell's Atlas
This offering features a very nice single-page. Highly-detailed, multi-color map of New York City(Northern Part) The map was rescued from Gaskell's Atlas of the World, published in 1888, which was in unsalvageable condition. The last two photos validate the origin of the map and its publishing date. This map shows Manhattan from 62nd Street north to Yonkers. NY. The areas of NYC north of the Harlem River are shown in detail, including the Bronx, which was called"Morrisania" in 1888. Also, the map shows parts of the New Jersey along the Hudson River, including the towns of Fort Lee, Cliffside, and others. Long Island City and Westchester County, NY are also featured. The map also illustrates elevated railroads, steam railroads, and numerous"lunatic" asylums on islands in the East River. Ferry lines to and from the city ... moreare also shown, as well as specific steam ship lines. All the streets and avenues in this northern section of the city are identified as they were named in 1888. This NYC map has a total page size of 10-5/8" wide x 13-1/2" long. And an image size of 8-7/8" wide x 12-1/2" long. The scale of the map is approximately 1 mile per inch of map. The map's condition is excellent, with no holes or tears in the image, and a very small tear in the bottom margin that extends very slightly into the image. There is also some light soiling in the margin. The paper condition is good with minimal yellowing. Not sure of the date but would guess 1960s from the typography and look of it. Solid shape with some typical age wear along spine and edges. This is a nice. Original 1938 spiral bound Touraide souvenir edition for New York World's Fair made by the Conoco travel bureau in Denver, Colorado. It measures 9" x 12" and contains 94 pages. Souvenir has some surface, corner and edge wear: light creasing on corners and a few tiny tears on right edge of back cover. This item would make a great addition to any collection! This auction is only for the map that is pictured in this listing. I cannot stress enough how beautiful this map is up close compared to the photos that you see. Note that the photos do not do the map justice. This is truly an incredible map to behold! This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Details: An early and rare state of Colton's map of New York City. The reason being that Central Park is now shown compared to the first state of the map but the paths and roads are not shown in the park yet like they are in the latter Colton editions of this map. The map has a fold as issued and is basically in perfect condition. The light pinkish ... moreline down the middle of the fold line is due to my camera flash and is NOT in the map at all. Like I said it is basically perfect in my opinion. These are just too hard to find in this condition. The copyright date is printed in the lower margin. 1970 Orange County New York Atlas by the City Street Directory(0) This is not a atlas in the traditional sense but rather a beautiful full color map that covers the county along with a full street index. It also lists points of interest and a number of the finer restaurants that were around at that time. Both the cover that holds the map as well as the map itself are full of advertisements from the county businesses that existed at that time. It all adds up to a great time capsule of what the County was like in 1970. It is a great way to see how the county has changed over the last 44 years. Please be aware that these Old Road Maps are anywhere from 10 to 90 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying may be in a condition that reflects both ... moreof these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. The map is from page 17 and has a map of Brooklyn on the back. The map is exquisitely printed. Easy to frame and would look great on the wall of your office or study. Page size: 11-1/4 x 14 inches Approximate map size: 9-1/2 x 12-1/4 inches Condition: The map image is in very good condition. There are some chips missing from the margin area and a 1 inch tear which just touches the black border around the map. See scan for details. You are bidding on a rare and very large original Atlas/Map of Parts of Wards 29- 32 Section 24 of East New York. Ditmas Park, East Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York 1920. It measures 27 1/2 x 37. It is on linen and in Ex+/Nr. Mint. Map covers from Utica Avenue to Remsen Avenue and from Farragut Road to Belerley Road and Avenue B. The roman numerals indicate how many stories each building is and each color represents the type of structure. Yellow is wood. Grey is concrete, blue is iron and pink`is brick. The Xs through the buildings indicate it is a barn or stable. The brown streets indicate cobblestone while green indicates macadamized pavement and white means it is unpaved. Features the lists of mail line railway RAILROADS from an old 1946 RAND MCNALLY large scale size ATLAS that was bound in such a way that the maps are removable for WALL DISPLAY& framing or table layout. the sheet is approximately 20 1/2" x 27 1/2" inches. BACKSTORY: The outer binding of an old commercial atlas oversize book was damaged. Therefore presenting the conclusion of removing the individual maps for individual sale. The large atlas was printed in USA of course. And it's the POST WAR(WWII) printing of this particular publication. The colors on this map are superb! Nice aging has occurred over the years. Presenting ... morean authentic(because it is! as you can see in photo there is a particular yellowing/aging along one margin of the map. But there may also be moderate yellowing/aging throughout. There is a single fold in this map due to it's large size& the way it was bound in the book. But it is ONE SHEET. The model is equipped with NMRA couplers. We test ran the model and it runs well with constant lighting. This is an earlier run that is pre DCC diesel. General Electric and locomotive builder Alco teamed up during March of 1941 to produce the ALCO RS-1. This B-B AAR locomotive was a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive was produced t by Alco-GE between 1941 until 1953 and the American Locomotive Company took over all aspects ... moreof production from 1953 to 1960. The Alco RS-1 has continues to be the longest production run of any diesel locomotive for the North American market. The basic car body configuration of the RS-1 forged the road switcher type of diesel locomotive as most locomotives built since have followed this fundamental layout. Although the Chicago. Rock Island& Pacific Railroad approached ALCO as early as 1940 about building a locomotive for both road and switching service, with the winds of war swirling about the first thirteen production locomotives were requisitioned by the US Army. These requisitioned RS-1s were later remanufactured by ALCO into six axle RSD-1s for use on the Trans Iranian Railroad to supply the Soviet Union during World War Two.
