1881 PLAT/ MAP of R. SADLER’S CLAIM on MORNING STAR LODE. EUREKA COUNTY, NEVADA Tightly rolled and creased map. Measures 11” x 18” unrolled. Ceramic frogs used to hold the map opened DO NOT come with the map. Just in case you were hoping(or should I say hopping? POOR condition. Blue coloring has faded, leaving white and blue splotchy streaks, there are some rust colored areas, lots of horizontal creases, the line drawn map on the left side of the plat is visible but difficult to read, the printed and written information on the right side of the plat is legible on the top part and very hard to read on the bottom part(because the writing is so small and is blue on blue) Nonetheless a very cool 1881 claim map, with written details. USA David Lewis Drew was born in Plymouth. Massachusetts, the fourth generation of David Drew's. His ancestral lineage traces many Mayflower passengers and other early settlers of Plymouth. After his mother died, David did not get along with his new step-mother and decided to find his'fortune' in the California gold fields. One of his mining claims was at Bostwick Bar on the Stanislaus River in Calaveras County, California and was known as the'Ruby' Placer Mine. David married Helen Marr Farrar who had migrated west with her father and younger sister from Wisconsin after the death of her mother. Brother and grandmother. After their marriage they lived on Mormon Creek and the Stanislaus River for about 12 years. The location was always a little dangerous and after David was attacked by Indians at their home. He moved his family into town in Copperopolis, Calaveras County. David's gold panning and prospecting never produced much money although he was involved in the ownership of many mines and claims. Attractive large map showing the world distribution of gold-mining. Taken from a dilapidated Atlas of the World’s Commerce. It measures 43cm x 35cm approx. Excluding margins; printed on heavy paper. Vertical centrefold as published. The verso is printed with further information related to the map– tables, charts and text. The map is bright and fresh in appearance; mild discolouration along the centrefold. The margins have some tanning and light handling soiling. There is a short split at the bottom of the centrefold. Not reaching the printed border, and some light bumping on the edges and corners. I’ll post the map rolled in a wide-diameter posting tube. 1910 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN POSTHUMOUS LETTER BY GOLD MINING ENGINEER MAP TO ORE?
This is a very unusual item which I lucked upon forgotten in a box of old family photos at an estate sale. It is a handwritten letter in an envelope. On the envelope. It says"Posthumous Letter No 2 Duplicate J.B. Platts" For those who need a little refresher, a posthumous letter is a letter you write while alive, and arrange for it to be sent when you're dead, such as by your lawyer. As soon as I saw that, I figured it would be an important letter, because people don't send frivolous posthumous letters. The second clue was the security mechanism that John Platts used on the back of the envelope, which consists of little slips of paper glued across the envelope flap seam, which he's signed. Therefore, if the seal is broke, someone has read it. However, someone ended up opening this letter with a letter opener at the top, ... moreironically. Ok, so the letter is actully very brief, it says, The BLANK(geographical feature) at BLANK BLANK(Specific Place) is BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK(five words which are a scientific/geological/mineral description. Look up the above in Kemp's"Handbook of Rocks" John B. Platts Feb 10, 1911. When I read that I immediately thought of gold, because of the era, this is the West, and when you combine the fact that he wanted this information to be passed on after he died, it would be reasonable. So, I googled the name John B. Platts and found out he was a professional in the gold mining industry! I believe he was an engineer or geologist. There are excerpts with his name to be found on google, just pair it with the term gold, and I'll see if I can re-find some of the info I originally found to post. Anyway, I next looked into the place name, and it was a place in Southern Oregon, which John Platts had ties to. He lived and or worked out of Southern Oregon and Northern California, but seemed to have traveled all over the country in his work as a mining company professional. The document measures about 11 1/2" x 17" and has been folded. There is a hand drawn map of the Mine. It measures about 13 1/4" x 17" and is printed on an acetate type paper.
